Raising or Bending Live Oak Limbs on Hist. Sites

Raising or Bending Live Oak Limbs and Without causing harm.
How would you raise green Live Oak limbs, without cuasing harm, up to 2 ft high?

Clarrification: Yes the limbs are green/live and by raising the temporaly will ensure the preservation of the limbs and tree

Remove most of the pendant limbs.

There is a lot to be said for enjoying and preserving the natural form of a tree. This tree may well be on it's way to becoming a spectacular specimen with limbs touching the ground. I see many trees with their canopies raised way to high.

Dan, you guys are missing the key word: "temporarily" Jody just left out the "ri"; right Jody?

Yes I did miss that. Thanks.

Re: Raising or Bending Live Oak Limbs on Hist. Sit

I've talked w/Jody about this project. Since the trees are on a historic site pruning is not an option. The trees line a long driveway and removing low limbs would ruin the look of the site.

My suggestion to Jody was to use slings around the limbs and cable/rope to hoist the limbs up using come-alongs or a handy billy. Using a load releasing system or Munter would allow the limb to be settled back into it's natural position later.

Yup, temporary guying, hope there's enough flex in the limbs and that it works well, and that a picture or 2 gets took.

I guys,

I sorry I did not reply back sooner.

Let me fill you guys in and hopefully you can add some suggestions.

Wormsloe State Historic Site in Savannah, GA has one of the longest tree driveways (1 mile long) in the USA.

The trees that line the driveway are Live Oak. The State Forrest called me to give him a hand becuase a timber thin was going to occur for some pine trees in the back of the property.

To get to the pine trees the loggers had to drive their vehicals down the tree driveway. Well that ment that about 8 limbs would b e snapped off.

Please note the fellowing:
1) Could not cut limbs (not even dead ones).
2) Metal could not touch the tree (so cable, etc was out).
3) Had to be temporaly.

Facts about driveway:
1) Used is several movies
2) One of the longest in USA
3) Almost 70% of all wedding shoots in Savannah, GA are shot at the tree driveway.
4) Trees Planted during the late 1800's for the birth of the owners son. (400 trees planted).
5) Species of tree--- Live Oak Tree.
6) Live Oak is GA State's Tree
7) The USA during the 1700's stated that the Live Oak should be protected for national security. So groves were created to raise an protect the tree for generations.

We did the project and it was a success, but we need to do a better job. We will have to do other sites in the future.
I have some ideas and could use some help batting them down and suggestions as well.
I will post ideas later this week. Is any one on board?

Re: Raising or Bending Live Oak Limbs on Hist. Sit

I will try to post photos of drive way. I may need some help doing this.

In the mentime some suggested tools to use would be the following:

1) To use one of the following:: The Good Rigging Control System vs. H-2 Hobbs-- Second Generation Lowering and Lifting Device.

2) Cobra- Dynamic Non-invasive System vs. Sling-grade Tenex (this would be secure limbs for a moment)

3) Amstell Blue Winch and Sling Line (to raise limbs, so that limbs could be tied off with either the Cobra or Sling-grade Tenex.

Please note that the highest we lifted or arched a limb was 3 ft. Our biggest limb was almost 10in.

Also note that you may have other options that are better.

1) We would like to have a safe system that would allone one to lower the limb from the ground and be able to retrieve all gear as well.

Any open discuession would be great.

Re: Raising or Bending Live Oak Limbs on Hist. Sit

Briefly....

Tenex is a lot cheaper than full static lines, is quite low stretch, and is plenty strong. 1/2 inch is all you'd need.

Shouldn't need cobra...as the installs are temporary.

To avoid damaging the bark/cambium, careful choice of material is important. Either pad the area to be tied with old carpet, or use something like Tufflex slings...which should be basket hitched rather than girth hitched. (But if basket hitching is used, limit the loading to directly inline and installed such that the sling can't slip sideways which would cause damage.

If A GRCS is available, use it. Far better than the Hobbs for this. Otherwise, I'd think that a 5-1 pulley system would be able to do the job. Two people could apply over 1000 pounds of force. Might be enough....

To retrieve gear from the ground is probably not practical, in light of my 3rd paragraph.

Re: Raising or Bending Live Oak Limbs on Hist. Sit

Jody- what is your budget, time restriction, and desire to learn no techniques to accomplish the task. We can teach you ways to install a pulley up in the tree without having to climb up there.

To do this on many trees could be quite costly. A midsized pulley, plus carabiner and 2 rigging lines could approach $500. How many trees are we talking here?

The GRCS is about $2500, too. Does anyone in your area have one?

Long-time listener, first-time caller...

Jody,

Can I take this in another direction? Why do you need to allow such massive vehicles down the drive, just to thin a stand of pine?

Are there no other options on that end of the project?
