qustion

i was told today that hooking a live tree that is not being removed will not harm the tree nomore then the bugs that are on it is this true i was told when i started tree work never hook a live tree inless it is being removed with one is right

never spike a tree unless it is a take down. or in a rescue situation. if a persons life is at stake, and it'll get you up there faster so be it. but i know alot of guys who spike just because they don't know any other way, and thats no excuse.

keep on keep'n on

The thing about spiking a living tree is... you don't know whether you're hurting the tree. Some species handle that kind of wound fine, others... not so much. Stressed trees are also easier to hurt. Spike tracks LOOK bad and they show up bigtime by leaking when oaks get frothy flux going.

Spiking wounds the tree, pruning wounds the tree, careless rope climbing wounds the tree. Wounds are opportunities for something to go wrong... fungus can use those opportunities (wounds) to start a feeding frenzy and damage or kill the tree.

Bottom line, if you're an arborist, you don't spike anything but removals. Doing otherwise is bad form, unprofessional and goes against what arboriculture is about.

well said but you also have to give reasons behind not spuring a tree your gaffs can carry diseases and you can transfer diseases, your scaring the tree, making it easier for bugs and birds to get under the bark and sometimes if you kick hard enough you can damage the cambium never use spurs unless your removing a tree or have to rescue someone.
cheers!
