I have had the great ones like that before, but lik eth erest of ya i still like the great oldy as you are putting on your helmet and ropes are in place that someone asks
" Are ya going to climb it"
" Naw thought I would floss the branches"

Or just the opposite. The customer watches you finish, hit the ground, take off your gear and THEN they come over to you and start pointing up...

"Can you go back up and get that one limb?"

"could i borrow your blower thingy, i need to unblock the sink?""!!

"did you know that if you stick a copper nail into a tree it will die?" - "did you now that copper is an incredibly soft metal and if you tried to hit in to most trees it would bend and also do you know of any old ship builders from where you may purchase said copper nail?" - " What about BnQ warehouse???" - "i think you best go and put the kettle on mate before you say anything else"

"All it takes is the right equipment!"

Said to me after completing a large, technical removal. My response...

"Oh...here..." as I bent down and picked up my harness and held it out to him. An attempt at an endearing comment came out very patronizing and I wouldn't have it on that particular day. Everyone has had one of those days, right?

There have been some wonderful lines in this thread!

At the TCIA show this guy came up to me and said the GRCS was worthless because if you lost the crank handle you could'nt do any work with it.

I asked him what would he do if he lost his car keys!

This is what people say sometimes when they look at my photos:
"You must have a really nice camera"

I say "Oh yes it's very good" but what I think is "It's not the freakin' camera, it's the eye looking though the viewfinder"

Bystander:
"Hey, you must have one heck of a throwbag to throw so accurately"

Treeclimber:
"Yep, if that throwbag didn't have eyes I'd never get my rope into a tree. I just throw it up there, walk away and it does the rest. For that matter at the end of the day I just get in my truck and tell it to go home and sit back and enjoy the ride."

I use trained squirrls.

After surveying the tree with rope high in tree and I'm rigged to ascend, a teenage resident ventures from the house and asks, "Did you climb way up to the top already?"

"No. I have trained squirrels." Which drew an even more puzzled and amazed expression on the girl.

A little old lady watching me work from the kitchen. She calls us in for payment. Handing me the check, she looks over the rim of her glasses and scolds me like a head mistress:

"NOW I bet you wish you'd done better at school!"

I'd just finished a 4 yr apprenceship with block release to college - nothing like an appreciative client, huh?

Grrrr!

Something has to be done to educate people the arborists are knowledge workers with as much learning invested as most white collar types. I've been in both places and I have to devote considerably more thought to caring for trees than I ever did information systems or quality assurance... never mind all the mental masturbation of 'management' meetings.

Tree care and aerial safety is knowledge work with a dangerous edge.
