Question about figure eight without ears.

Thanks for everyones input. I might give the Huit a try. I own and have tried the GG and DO NOT like it as a repel device. For me seems to be either off or locked up and it requires two hands, one on the lever and one on the trailing end of the rope. I use it often as a belay device when sport rock climbing and it works good for that.

TreeBarber,

One should use two hands to operate the Grigri, just as you described - that's exactly the way the instructions for the Grigri read. But, doesn't a F8 require two hands too? One to hold the downside of the rope and the other hand on the backup to the F8? You do back up the F8 don't you?

I have used the Grigri on several different ropes and types of rope. The combination that I am really impressed with is Velocity rope and the Grigri.

The Grigri with Velocity has incredible control and no hint of that slide/grab characteristic that you experienced. I have experienced that grabby characteristic with other ropes.

...I tie my first stopper knot about 6-8 ft off the ground, then I might tie another at places where I pass a limb that will be in the path of my fall. I just tie an overhand on a bight for a stopper.

I think I'm gonna switch from a safety knot to the overhand on a bight. A safety knot can work loose and seems like the overhand on a bight would be much more secure.

Ron, thanks for the reply.
I do use a prusik back up with my figure 8. I have the F8 attached to my saddle via a 8-10 lanyard then have the backup installed below the F8. This is a short prusik attached to the right side of my saddle. When descending I have my right hand over and on top of the prusik knot. When I need to stop I let go of the prusik and it holds the rope increasing the pull in the F8 acting as a third hand. The distance between the knot and the F8 is sufficient to prevent the knot being pulled in to the 8. This technique only required one had while descending.
The rope that I use most frequently is the Velocity, I have not tried the gregri with it, I will give it a go next time out.
Thanks again.
Pat.

TreeBarber,

Is the 'wax' off your Velocity yet? My Velocity is farily 'young' and while I no longer notice that waxy new feel, I can't help but wonder if there's just enough on the rope to make a difference with the Grigri. If your Velocity no longer has the wax on it, I'm gonna be very curious to see how it performs with the Grigri.

The thing that I like about the Grigri is I can ascend and descend with it. If I have a high entry, say 30' or more, I tend to ascend with an ascender and switch over to the Grigri when I'm in the tree and anticipate ups and downs or manuevering about the tree.

Then, since the Grigri is already 'on rope', it's convenient to rappel on and pretty much has a hands off auto-stop. But I have to go a bit slower because the Grigri does heat up.

Velocity is "wax free". The 'Sure Grip Technology' is a water based urethane coating. Wash it and the 'Sure Grip Technology' becomes diluted.

Thats good to know. The rope is in need for a wash also.
