Puzzled about back ups

To all, this is my "high tec" version of suspenders and a belt. A 75# zip tie snugged up, fits in just right because of the angles on the rounded portion of the block, it holds its position and it is impossible to open the side plate while it is in that position.

It takes a strong thumb to push it over the top so the push pin can be released.

What do you think?

Makes sense but the swivel would not swivel. Why not just use a nice rescue pulley? Or...a rescue pulley with a screwlink to a swivel? If you feel the need to swivel.

>>>that was for the last pic. I'm too slow<<<

some of us consider a backup a bit redundant but all tree climbing championships require a backup and I believe the ansi standard does as well. I agree that any backup is better than none but the practice of backing up a mechanical device with another is frowned upon it is more secure to back it up with a cord and a hitch of some kind.

Who frowns upon that practice and why is a hitch better than mechanical?

Frowned upon by who?

A back up is a back up mechanical or knot.

The "idea" of a back up is redundancy.

Backups are not necessary when the proper system or knot is used in the proper application, and tied or engaged correctly.

If you feel the need to backup a system or knot because you think it may fail, then you should choose a different system or knot all together.

I never have used any type of back up when using mar bars. The only way a good ascender will fail is if some foreign object prevents the cam from closing. If you set the rope so it does not encounter brush on the way up, or climb slowly through brush keeping it out of the way of the cams you won't have a problem. I have experienced more "oh S--t" moments when climbing old school; footlocking with a prussik.
