Puzzled about back ups

cool, thanks, Yeah i agree that the block looks awfully heavy and lumber some. I've just been looking for a substitute for the rock exotica swivel. I want a pulley/block that spins in a full 360 but is light, and would pass ansi regulations.

Thanks for the help on its name.

If you get a chance to handle a Rock Exotica Pulley I think you would appreciate it a little more. It is a very high quality piece of equipment and I use it on a regular basis in my climbing system for work, not competition. If the use is kept within its design parameters, then there is no issue with failure due to misuse. When I hear that used in an argue "that if misused, it could fail", I can feel my eyes start to roll. That's a lame argument that needs to be left at home because there is no end of the equipment or techniques that that statement is applicable to.

So if you are a consciencious climber and thinking of trying one, go ahead and take a look at it. I love mine.

I have been able to use one. They are great, very nice. Further down the road i'd like to compete, and when that time comes i don't want to switch my gear or climbing style for competition. I agree 100% on what your saying especially about the [ QUOTE ]

Rock has always sold the stuff he makes, but yes usually under contract to the large outfits.

As to why he now is going out more on his own, you have to ask him that as it is a personal question.

give him a call, order something and ask. He is an easy person to talk to and friendly.

I KNOW that I had done a web search in the past year, probably including rockexotica.com and not found anything except Wren industries. They do not appear to be affiliated.
http://www.wrenindustries.com

One of the products for which I was searching was the Arizona Vortex Multipod, which was apparently being manufactured by Wren http://www.wrenindustries.com/av_home.html

CMC Rescue still listed the Arizona Vortex as being made by RX though

Now RX lists it themselves, alothough they've dropped the 'Arizona' handle

Wren industries IS/was Rock Thompson's company.

I never would have even made the association:

1. I assume that Rock Thompson is a not a woman. From their website: "Wren Industries is a HubZone, Woman-Owned Small Business"

2. Wren is in Grand Junction CO and RX is in Clearfield, Utah - 310 miles apart.

A simple phone call woulda cleared that up for you

Maybe true, but the hunt is part of the fun ... also exercises the research/detective skills.

I went out to the yard and tried some different ideas as suggested. I used a clove hitch with a half hitch to back it up to fasten to the carabiner. I also retied the Blake's hitch.

You know what!?

That is an excellent back up! I have all of these devices and this (your solution) makes it seem safe to me.....

You know, lots of stuff seems safe until you have 200' of clear space between you and the ground....

I was thinking that myself. You probably could get away with moving to the trunk and pulling your tail up or something of that manner to get yourself into working postition again. Might it be possible to coat or have a coating to protect the prussik. Maybe a type of srink tubing or even a rubber hose?

Another idea to backup the RE pulley would be to make a short quick draw using two locking biners instead of non-lockers that rock climbers use. One end of the runner goes onto the upper biner and a second biner clips around the climbing rope.

No hard/hard or soft/soft links to be concerned about.

I realize that the eye on eye cord is used as a concept...

If something like that were used the orange rope would drop and create a large load and possible 'rug burn' with enough heat to damage the cord or climbing rope.
