pruning in the spring & sapflow

Correct me if I am way off base, but - a tree will put its top growth on in the spring (as opposed to root growth in the fall, meaning that the enrgy it has stored in the roots of the tree will be moving up and out to areas already "predetermined" by the tree. True that this energy could be directed elsewhere if the branch was cut earlier in the year, but is there really a loss to the tree if it sends its sap out a wound instead of to the branch that was there?
