I was showed this by an old pro today. Its been passed down for many generations. The notch needs to be half way through the trunk.

I wish I'd taken a picture of a chewed tree I removed this year. It started out about 20"X60' poplar and the beaver had it balancing on about a 4" post. The client didn't even sound concerned when he called and I took over a week to go look at it.

A sawer schooled me on the finer points of "off set" hearts of leaners... Among many other important things to file about reading the structural/growth attributes of "kooky" wood.

Imagine how many beavers died figuring that out! Probably they live so in the moment that it just came to them like common sense, aside from us who thinks we just know better.

Surely you jest....but a viable felling technique for extreme leaners is to treat the tree like a spring pole and release by shaving cuts on the compression side. I have used it as a last resort on a few occasions. Gravity and the lever arm will win. The skill part is to be able to make the cut without pinching and knowing when to walk away to a safe spot and let gravity and the lever arm win the battle. Dont try it without your beaver pelt hat on. Where's the fox hat?
