Preserving CSM slabs

Hey guys,

Hot, rainy, humid Florida. CSM slabs to be stored outdoors. How should I keep the rot at bay? I posted on another forum and got one reply. Looking for a bit more input...

There was a large dip tank at a sawmill where I used to work. Lifts of pine would get submerged in the tank for a couple of minutes. It helped to minimize blue stain. The solution contained one of the same ingredients found in Lysol.
Mebbe you could use a backpack sprayer with a disinfectent or fungicidal solution. Along with stacking those slabs well off of the ground.

Sticker the slabs to allow plenty of airflow between them, if possible keep under a roof of some sort to keep the rain out

This is interesting to me. Whatever-icidal treatments seem speculative, or ineffective. I keep getting forced back to "stack it 18+" above grade" and "put a roof over it". And stickered, obviously. I'm trying to convince my co-conspirator that a tarp is bad for airflow. 'Dis sh*t's complicated, but perhaps simple.

Talk to a woodworker.

Hey @JD3000, when you say that, I feel like we might be on different wavelengths. I'd talk to one about how fungicidal treatments affect wood appearance upon commencing work with dried slabs. What would you talk to a woodworker about? Do they know much about non-kiln drying of natural edge slabs?

Figured a wood craftsman would know how to preserve non kiln dried wood slabs better than I. Dont know how viable spraying them with Chlorothalonil is gonna be.

Would you use them for table or bar tops or fireplace mantles or something? Those certainly look pretty cool.

How bout that stuff bonsai folks use to preserve deadwood? I think your right about reducing their exposure to humidity and wind borne spores

All of that. I think I can monetize it, and have fun. To some extent, I think the wood and the person form a dialect, so saying what it will be used for, ahead of time, is difficult...

I'll look into the bonsai lead - thanks!

WEWS has been very useful for us. Give it a try you will not be disappointed.

I know for some woods a borax solution is sprayed. perhaps google thay

I looked *way* into borax. Great stuff, but kind of no point to it, imo, because it washes off in the rain. If it's out of the rain, it stays dry and doesn't require borax...

We would build roughsawn buildings and pressure wash the boards with it, and then for the board and bat do the same. I think the point was to prevent any incipient decay from advancing.
