Preferred Method of Dirt Removal for Final Stump Cut

Slight derail Pelorus but how did u anchor your speedline on the ice just curious.

Normally we will chainsaw a hole in the ice just big enough to insert a piece of wood, eg. 6X6, or stout chunk of a limb, which acts like a toggle bolt. Same principle as a drywall anchor. A chain or strap is attached to the center of the wood, and a Porty / block / come-a-long, or winch is attached to the chain.

In this case the water level of the lake close to shore was so low that the ice was frozen almost to the bottom, so we needed something different. Came up with two ideas. The threaded rod with amon eye nut is 1" dia. The square tube is heavy wall receiver hitch 4'long, with a shackle I welded to it. The day before the job I augered these in, and pounded them down into the mud. Temp went down to -13C that night, and they froze in beautiful.

OK Dave, that seems like (half) of a really good idea, but then how do you get them back once they're frozen into the lake bottom? Wait until July?

They were not able to freeze right into the bottom - there was a couple of inches of water between the bottom and about 20" + of ice. Literally 5 minutes work with a bar punching the ice around them was enough to be able to lever them out.
Used a 7/8" carbide tipped auger bit with the extension shown in a gas drill to drill the holes, and. 2" dia soil auger to widen the one hole enough to accommodate the 2-1/2 square tube.

My favorite method for flush cutting stumps is to grab someone else's saw. I am a firm believer that a nice looking stump makes for a nice looking job...
