Positioner

Re: Positioner/ RG

I've never really needed to set a RG from the ground. I got a call to do a very dead Cherry removal about 25" dbh. There was a large Oak right over it and I wanted to climb off the RG so I just sent it up a full length of rope.

Re: Positioner/ RG

I took the RG off the short rope it was on. The I took a climbing line installed in the tree girth hitcged a ring in the spliced eye, installed the RG with My climbing line in it and sent it up.

Re: Positioner/ RG

Frans,

I've yet to try. I know of the easiest way (what Todd says) but never did it. Didj has a neat idea there too. Hillbilly has drawn a very good diagram of a way to do it in a previous thread as well.

I personally climb up to the point of tie in and then move on (usually). Otherwise, I use a rescue puley and Robert Phillips' technique from the ground.

Re: Positioner/ RG

Back to the positioner. I have some brand new KM111 and tried it in the P. To my dissapointment the cord slid right through. Then I tried some older KM111 and it worked perfectly. Only problem I do not have a long enough peice the is broken in. So I will wear in a piece using a Friction Hitch. Thanks Tom.

Re: Positioner/ RG

Ok, I've been using the Positioner for maybe a month and a half now. I need to get it back to it's owner soon...he's kindof ornery!

Question for those of you using the Positioner. When you are leaning on it, do you have to get your weight off it if you want to let slack into the system? It seems no matter what I do, how I grab the Positioner, it's either -holding me, or letting me go. No in-between. Might this be a matter of the type of line that it's grabbing on? Perhaps line diameter is the issue.

I like the Positioner on my side. It's lightweight. The slack advances soooo smoothly. But as it is right now, as far as function is concerned, I might as well have a petzl Micrograb over there.

When I had a distel with pulley as slack tender, it was still smooth, and I could let out 1mm of slack if I wanted to...while I'm hanging in it. I'm not sure I could let slack out of the Positioner if I was hanging in it in a dead hang.

And if you can use the Positioner where you'd normally put the friction hitch on your flip line, why can't you use it where you'd normally put the friction hitch on your climbing line?

You can, they call it a LockJack. Want to buy one?

These tools are very sensitive and I agree with the 'on' or 'off' type sensation. The aluminum cams seem to wear quite quickly when used as a friction hitch on the climbing line (the LockJack). Mine wore out in a month and now slips even with a new clutch. I went back to a VT hitch.

As with some other tools I've bought in the past, not a single person had anything but praise for this item before I bought it. Within 2 months I regretted the purchase and would recommend against anyone else buying one. There will be a mechanical replacement for our modern friction hitches some day, but this ain't it.

I'm afraid I will not buy anything for life support that requires a tiny rubber band in order to work properly, either. you'd think for the price, they would be able to incorporate some sort of spring instead of a rubber band. Although I have heard that the Positioner is the best use of this technology so far.

Re: Positioner/ RG

The lockjack is different, though. You have to clip the spliced eye of your climbing line to IT instead of your saddle. I'm just wonderin' why you can't just put the Positioner where you'd normally put your friction hitch, clip the other end of your climbing line to your saddle like you normally would, and climb on.

But really I want to know the secret to making this positioner work where it's supposed to...on my side.

Re: Positioner/ RG

The red o-rings that came w/the P broke soon after I started to use them. I don't notice the difference w/or w/o. I've considered getting some good hydraulic o-rings to see if they last longer.

I'm using the Fresco Saddle X fro a while so I had to make up a Distel adjuster. They work fine but the P is much smoother and has a shorter reaction time. Almost instant. W/the D there is a micro lag time. I know that this is splitting hairs but its the only thing that I have to differentiate the two.
My experiences with the ART tools is much different than yours Rocky. This shows that there are a lot of variables.

Re: Positioner/ RG

Like I mentioned before I am using a hitch to break in my km111. Like Tom said there is a lag time. Plus if I want to advance the lanyard 2 inches I need to move it at least 3. With the positioner its instant. Nick, I agree it is a little sensative but I have not experiecned such dramatic motion like you are describing. It is rare that I "hang" in my lanyard, I primarally only use it for work positioning so it does not have all my wieght. Rocky, a while back Hubert was developing a product called the metal machard. I used for a day and found it to be a big improvement over the sport or lock jack. That was some time ago and I have not anything more.
