Poison Ivy Protocol

Just did a pine this evening with a small (pencil diameter) vine on it. Stopped and got some technu on the way home. I'll see how well it works.

To ascend tree: shinny up trunk using vines for handholds; pants may be restrictive remove for increased mobility.

Cut vine with handsaw when bidding job. Wait a month before doing job.

Then, using handsaw like a hatchet, swat branchlets off and out of your way while climbing.
It has worked pretty well for me in the past, though I still pucker every time.
 
So, what is the best way to remove it from steel cored flip lines and or work positioning lanyards that cannot be put in the wifes laundry machine. I have the tecnu, but think it keeps coming back from a late summer job. I am worried about compromising the integrity of the steel core or lanyard due to rust or tecnu affecting the lanyards.
 
I’m highly allergic to poison ivy. I have gone to the doctor numerous times for the steroids.
Now I know after 22 year how to work with it. Srt has been a big factor.
First I lather up with technew lotion head to toe . (Every where)then I put long sleeve clothing on even on hot humid days. Climb above the poison ivy try to get the job done safety. And when I get to the ground I use the customers garden hose and a bottle of dish soap to wash off throughout the rest of the day. Get home wash clothes. Then take cold shower with dish soap to keep the pores closed and to cut the oils. Sometimes I’ll wear rain clothes to protect as well
 
I think there’s some great info in this thread. I agree with most that the best way to prevent it is to simply be able to ID it and keep yourself and your tools clean. But, for those unfortunate souls like myself who just seem to be extra sensitive and want a more natural solution to a horrible rash, I’ve found that applying melaleuca oil directly to the rash is an effective way to dry out the rash and recover in a few days as opposed to a couple of weeks. It’s been my go-to for years. Never had much luck with Tecnu or Zanfel, I think everyone’s body is just different and there’s not a “one size fits all” solution so here’s one more for those out there still suffering.

I skimmed.

Scrub with a washcloth or rag, especially in between fingers and sensitive areas work lots of soap. Don't cross-contaminate. If you need 4 rags, use 4.

I don't take anything with PI oil in the house. No way. Rubbermaid Brute can as a wash bin.

You can put a new tarp over a couple small logs to find an open basin filled with wash water.

Don't contaminate the truck!


Consider a free CL washer for PI, and pitchy, greasy work clothes.
Keep your work stuff out of the nice washer.
 
Great tip on the super hot water wash. It never fails to give relief. Itches and hurts like crazy but man does it feel good after.

I use Tecnu and Tecnu Extreme in the shower after PI exposure. Another thing i’ve used is apple cider vinegar in the shower before soaping up and “Tecnuing” down.

I used to get PI so bad I had to have shots and would get blisters that would burst and soak through my clothes. The past few years it has just been a real good rash but not the horrible boils and weeping rash.
 
This is a great vid! Always good to have a wash station and to remember that it’s like taking car grease off! I saw this vid a few years back.
 
A hair dryer blown directly on your skin for as long as you can take it helps for relief. And it feels freaking orgasmic [emoji23]

Wanna hear something crazy? Pretty controversial but I've tried it with poison oak and have had success. One of the best preventatives you can do is in early early spring when the leaves just start to sprout, pick a few off and eat em. I'm talking baby baby leaves that are just breaking out. This is a practice used by natives to lower their sensitivity to the urashiol. At this time of year, these first sprouts if leaves don't contain near the concentration of the oils as mature leaves at the end of summer. Sounds crazy but it does help. Won't make you totally immune first time but you'll notice a difference. If you're worried about eating it, you can put it in capsules to swallow whole. Try at your own risk haha
