PM Or Effer

I'm still thinking about an Effer 470 or a PM 48. The rear mount offers the best stability and the most usable radius, if you have 20' of deck, then thats 20' you lose off your chart.

I read ya. I figured you were trying to save distance for picks...

You're gonna have a nice set up.

Re: PM Or Effer Or Palfinger

Does that truck have a double frame? I know that my stick crane boom truck has the high PSI steel and also a double frame. I'm sure your Mack has the higher PSI. Nice truck, love those Alloys. What transmission?

Re: PM Or Effer Or Palfinger

I like the chassis, the cab over type design would sure help in tight manuvering, which I have to do almost every day. It probably has a tight turning radius also? I have long thought that the typical city garbage truck would be a good planform for a crane: heavy duty, but very compact with a tight turn, and I've wondered why that type chassis is not used?

Rear mount, after having one for a couple years now, I'd never go back to a behind the cab, you gain so much extra reach and or higher capacity by getting closer. The ONLY drawback is a couple times when having to haul long loads, with the behindthecab I'd just run it off the rear of the bed and flag it, thats harder to do with a crane back there. A minor drawback.

Get it CTman, you know you want it....and tell us all about it!

Re: PM Or Effer Or Palfinger

That and the rear mount also can cause the front end to get light when traveling empty.

Sometimes the extra radius is cancelled out by the loss of time having a dump body. And the 20' loss idea isn't quite accurate if you pull into the the lift zone or work off the side.

It may have a higher PSI, bt its only a single frame. I was shocked to see a single frame on the truck after reading the specs. They say a single frame will last longer because it flexes better than a double. It has an 8 spd with a low gear, I wold prefer an 8LL but an 8L and a careful driver should be able to bring out of just about any hole.

Hmmm, I am surprised to hear that with a 48 ton/meter boom.

I like the cab over chasis. We also were thinking of that design originally for our boom.

Haven't spoke with the PM dealer yet, but the Effer dealer was in out yard last week, and thats the first thing he told me. I wanted it rearmounted anyway.

What does your rig look like?

I don't know how true it is but the Manitex dealer told us was they would have to mount it on the same Wheelbase truck so we should just go for a conventonal truck.

Our 22101S was mounted on a Volvo FE with a 171" WB, we could put it anywhere you could drive a 4x4 truck so it was a real pain when we switched to our Sterling.

Re: PM Or Effer Or Palfinger

Yeah, most of time it doesn't make a big difference, but a few 20K plus truck unloading jobs made me really appreciate my rear mount (a misnomer, actually a rider), now I can can back up and put my rear end right up close and it is 5' to the center of rotation, and the load chart sure likes that instead of 15'! Mine is centered over the rear axles, I see some K boom are actually on the very end of the truck, so they can get REAL close.

Like this (without the grappel).

[/ QUOTE ]Tell us more about that truck Mark. It looks like a good long reach log truck/crane alternative. Any chance you want to sell?
