PM Or Effer

Re: PM Or Effer Or Palfinger

Yes by apples to apples I meant to have the same boom lenth because if you have a crane with a longer boom compared to one with a shorter one chances are the shorter on will lift more than the long one because it's boom weighs less.

So I picked the Effer that was close to the longest PM and I tried to pick the Palfinger with the same boom, but they don't make a jib for that model that is close to the others.

Those arent apples to apples

Pal 44002 is a 42.5 MT lifts 463# at 97'9"
Effer 470 is a 42.5 MT lifts 1010# at 96'4"

[/ QUOTE ]

That seems like apples to apples to me, same max capacity, almost the same radius, just one apple is better than the other.

Re: PM Or Effer Or Palfinger

The key things to know for decision making are:
What distance do you want to reach
How much weight do you want to be able to pick
What size truck do you want to use

Then look at each company and determine which unit from each company will achieve those.

Re: PM Or Effer Or Palfinger

My crane is similar to Mike Poors 550.

He can pick more weight because he has 2 sections less on the fly jib. I chose to sacrafice the weight so I could get the extra reach(Thus reaching high enough to take a smaller pick yet still be butt heavy.)

Just throwing out some of my thoughts from when I was looking at them.

I don't know what the amounts to. What is your target working radius and target lift capacity at that max working radius?

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm thinking around 60' radius with somewhere around a ton or more at that radius. This crane will likely be paired with the backyard crane we bought in december if the radius is more than 65-75'. Or we would send the 38 ton Manitex to the job instead.

Re: PM, Effer or Palfinger

My crane for instance has 1430# at 58' radius and 70' height
The jib has quick couplers for the hydraulics and a plug for wiring. Baskets are available

An Effer 850 6s6s will do 2685# at 58' radius at full height of maiun boom

Heres the specs I've come up with so far, I don't see any reason to compare apples to oranges so I chose 3 similar models with similar boom lengths and capacities:

Least number of points WINS

PM 48025+J905
Effer 470 5s+JB 4s
Palfinger PK44002D PJ125E

First Max. Lifting moment:

1. Palfinger: 307380 ft.lbs
2. PM: 305960 ft.lbs
3. Effer: 304830 ft.lbs

Full Ext. of Jib:

1. Palfinger: 92'
2. PM: 79'7"
3. Effer: 77'8"

Max lift @ Full Ext. of Jib:

1. Effer: 1940 lbs.
2. PM: 1610 lbs.
3. Palfinger: 882 lbs.(1190 @ 76')

Full Ext. of Main Boom:

1. Effer: 47'9"
2. PM: 47'7"
3. Palfinger: 46'

Max Lift @ Full Ext. of Main Boom:

1. Effer: 5650 lbs.
2. Palfinger: 5510 lbs.
3. PM: 5290 lbs.

Max Outrigger Spread:

1. Palfinger: 24'3"
2. PM: 25'7"
3. Effer: 25'8"

Dead Weight:

1. Palfinger: 12030 lbs.(9030 lbs. Plus estimated weight of 3000 lbs. for the jib)
2. PM: 13010 lbs.
3. Effer: 13270 lbs.

Slewing Torque:

1. PM: 39830 ft.lbs.
2. Palfinger: 32510 ft.lbs.
3. Effer: Not Listed

Totals:

1st place = Palfinger: 14
2nd place = PM: 16
3rd place = Effer: 18

There you go Palfinger wins as far as specs go, but there is more to it then that, I'll figure out soon when I'm talking to the dealers what the price is like, dealer support and stuff like that.

P.S. I already know the PM 48025 +J904 price range for just the boom.

Ha ha ha, excellent; I got u bittches stired up.

I am interested in reviewing your responses tomorrow when I am not so tired. 12 estimates today, Saturday.

cool.

I bet you will find Palfinger is most expensive. I go with the expensive stuff when it comes to serious equipment that we use to make money with.

OK here's another question I've had floating around in my head; Does the knuckle boom require a sub-frame or is it bolted directly to the frame of the truck?

[/ QUOTE ]
They definately require a subframe. That is a difference I see in mine vs the others I have seen. Mine is built super strong. You need to be able to spread the forces out just like a standard crane. My sub frame goes from cab to rear bumper. I have seen many that are only under the kboom.

Here are a couple pics of my subframe

Re: PM Or Effer Or Palfinger

Smith truck cranes did it before mounting the crane. They engineered it.

Re: PM Or Effer Or Palfinger

Ok so here's the truck we bought to mount our kboom on, got a good deal on it and because its a cabover the manuverability is great, it has a 235" wheel base a conventional truck with the same deck length would have at least a 275" WB. It also has a 400HP Mack engine and a 9 speed trans.

Re: PM Or Effer Or Palfinger

Nice photoshop job! And great choice on the LCF style Mac. That is exactly what I've been thinking of doing, if/when I get a K-boom.

So, why the rear mount? The behind the cab mount can be done if there were front stabalizers installed. (So, I've seen on Scania K-boom combos).

What sized K-boom did you decide to go with?
