To protect them from deer? I know they advertise other growing benefits, but I don't think they help that much.

The big thing with any shelters is to make sure they keep ground contact (in the winter, a gap at the ground will really dry the trees out as it acts like a chimney. Also make sure the the stakes don't come and push the tree over.
