Pfanner Protos

Does it have a screen or is it a plastic visor?

Arborist version (which Tree Stuff has) comes w/ a mesh screen.
My screen is "perforated/expanded foil" w/ ~17 openings per inch. Very light weight. I'm pretty sure this is the fine mesh version.

Pfanner says both fine & coarse mesh are available as an options.
Protos lists: 16 “notches”/cm2 Coarse
39 “notches”/cm2 Fine

Tree Stuff has both fine & coarse mesh visors, and says a plastic visor is coming.

My helmet was delivered to me today.

It comfortably, covers a lot more of my head, particularly the sides & back, than my Petzl Vertex or Pacific helmets.

You’re killing me Bonner. I’ve got a brand new Pacific helmet waiting in a box for me to dial it in and put it in service. All the features you show on this helmet make it look very tempting.

Nick, your speaking on film has gotten to professional stage I think. Wow, great job explaining very clear and articulate. Seriously, no sarcasm, great job !

Luke clearly enjoyed that, its obvious. Good info. What a team

I am finally getting your Brit humor/sarcasm now that I know you a bit better. Your posts are much more enjoyable now. :-)

Many, many years ago I had a motorcycle (British 1958 Matchless).
I bought the best helmet that I could afford …… because I only had one very small brain.

I already have 3 perfectly good helmets (Petzl Vertex, Pacific brimmed, etc).

I bought a Protos, because it appears to have several areas of increased protection; specifically the sides, back, and the top.
The sides & back have increased coverage.
The top suspension does not have the normal strap webbing. It has a high tech “honey comb” (well ventilated) & foam top suspension.

The helmet is very comfortable & has an extremely secure feeling. It has LOTS of adjustments.

I have a small head (7-1/8 hat Sz), and this hat has no problems fitting.
(I have to add "spacers" to the head band of my Petzl Vertex.)

After fixing the initial headband diameter, the simple “flip-down” clamp in the back secures the helmet below the ball on the back of the head ……… very secure feeling !

The integral ear muffs are terrific ! They fold back into the helmet (very compact !), but also seem to add side protection.
The sound reduction is great. The compression adjustment is very easy !
I will still wear ear plugs, but because the muffs are there, I will use them !

I have both of the mesh visor options (coarse & fine).
The Protos website states:
16 “notches”/cm2 and 39 “notches”/cm2

Visually they don’t seem all that different.
However, contrary to the intended design, the fine mesh seems to have less of a "distraction" quality. Just IMO.

Because they are just mesh, I will also always wear glasses w/ side shields (as recommended by Pfanner).

Will the Protos have any updates for an integrated communication system in the near future? I think that would put it right on top of the market...to offer all the current features and the added benefit of wireless com.

I'm back to the Petzl Alveo Vent with vizor and ear defenders from Husqvarna.

* In the end I was not convinced about the ventilation of the Protos (mine was one of the first that was shipped, the ones without honey comb insert). I even completely removed the top cover to have a couple more 'ventilation slots'.
* I was never able to adjust the the ear defenders completely to my satisfaction. The length of their attachment was just not long enough for me. The lower part of the defender was in constant contact with the lower part of my ear.
* While wearing the helmet the clip on the back of the helmet almost constantly came loose/open. That meant the helmet became a loose bucket on my head again.

Too bad because the concept to me looked very promising.
The visor system is IMHO the very best of the best you can get on a helmet. That and the in-helmet ear defender system is something I really miss.
Climbing Taxus or for that matter all trees with a close brush of twigs was a treat with the Protos visor closed.

The current Protos:

1. It has Honey comb in the top for impact protection, which is completely open to the top vents for ventilation. There is a small pad of foam at the very top for head cushion.

2. The ear muffs, as I stated above, have lots of adjustment. It is very good, at least for me.

3. The clip on the back seems very secure ……….. perhaps it has been improved, from that noted above.
(Treespotter wrote: “mine was one of the first that was shipped, the ones without honey comb insert”).

Initially, it did seem a little heavy (e.g. compared to Petzl Vertex).
However, it does have integrated ear muffs, a nice face visor, AND improved side & back protection !

Oh, look here, Mr. Tom The "I'm all on the cover of TCI Magazine cuz I'm so cool and deja vu-ie pants" Tree Man! I'm just wondering, and though I'd bump my own post rather than retyping. Be part of the solution, rather than saying things like "Yeah, right. No way! Not now! Not never! Not my helmet, not my problem."
