Petzl ZigZag letter

The following quote was in response to a post in which concern was expressed about the possibility that an empty Petzl Zig-Zag could possibly be harmed by putting too much pressure on leverage points when opened up further than is normally possible when a rope is installed within it.

Agreed, I saw that as an issue one day and always leave mine on the rope or on long wooden dowel.

The long wooden dowel for storage is a really smart and interesting practice; I do not own a Zig-Zag, but I appreciate the ingenuity behind this post anyway. This would be a great standard practice for all owners of the Zig-Zag.

Thanks for posting the idea.

i have had issues with the SJ. The fucking clutch handle got knock out after a goundy didn't let the rope run fast enough and the butt of a mid tied limb came and poked up through a crotch. i tried the zigzag and didn't like it as well as the SJ. The best part of the LJ in my opinion is the ease of on and off the rope. If i am working the tree from the bottom to the top i use the SJ. If i am working it from the top down i use a hitch. Multiple tools in the tool box just pick the right one for the right task and you will whoop the work. and i still use the SJ without fear by the way. I tried the zigzag with velocity and it still didn't tend a 1/4 as well as the SJ or LJ. Not a hater, but there are better tools than the ZZ imho.

Hey, Jeff! You are obviously an accomplished and subtle climber. You talk about which device to use in which situation the way that I hear musicians talking about their form of art.

Having said all of that by way of introduction, I was wondering if you have ever tried to use the Lockjack in combination with the Rope Wrench in order to try to climb SRT with it?

This thought just occurred to me, and I haven't taken the time to jump out of this thread to do a forum search to see whether or not this subject has been covered already, so please forgive if it has.

The idea of a quick disconnect for the Rope Wrench coupled with the fast on/off rope of the Lockjack seems like it might be a winning combination.

Time for me to do a forum search to see if I can find any photos of such a setup. Thanks in advance for any answer you choose to provide to my post.

I saw some pictures of a LJ / RW combo a while ago in a german treeclimber board:

Hey, medi! Thanks for this post! Welcome to the TreeBuzz forum!

I hope you don't mind me mentioning that I looked at your profile and noticed that it says you live in Germany. Great photos on that forum, and I really appreciate you posting the link to them. I cannot read German, though, so I was wondering if you do, and if so, if you could give the general statements that the guy who posted those photos made about the use of the LockJack with the Rope Wrench.

I basically want to know if it seemed to work or not, and what the climber felt about his climbing experience when using that combination of devices.

If I'm asking too much, I'll understand, and just say thanks for posting. If you could help with this, however, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help you choose to give.

Hey, medi! I also found this great thread on ArbtalkUK from back in August and September of 2012. Kevin Bingham himself chimed in on the fact that the Rope Wrench was just beginning to gain acceptance in the various climbing competitions. He had not used the Rope Wrench with the Lockjack himself at that point in time, and I do not know whether or not he ever has. ART, the manufacturers of the Lockjack, have never approved it for use single line. Guys have used it for SRT, however, and they think it works well. Three pages of interesting information.

I'm starting with post #6, I think because in this one post the guy says something significant. The whole thread is worth reading, however.

Hi Tim,
found a video about the LJ/RW combo:

If I should sum up the posts in the german forum for you (link above) then the guy tested the LJ/RW combo just a few times in his back yard and he was quite happy with the results. After he got one of the first ZigZag he said: "I have to request early retirement for my two LJ". And furthermore "in the background you can see the true Holy Grail" (written below Picture with Zig Zag behind LJ).

Hope this helps a little....

Hey TimBr. A bit off topic, but this might help. I'd suggest trying your web browser to translate for you. Humour doesn't translate well tho, especially the Pommie and Aussie stuff :ROFLMAO:

I know Chrome translates automatically and I use Chrome on everything so I can't comment on other browsers. It's not prefect, but it's pretty good.

Hey, Howie65! Thanks so much for finding this footage! Really cool stuff! The video was posted in February 2012, I think, back in the days before they figured out the need for the stiff tethers. The climbers did an admirable job of it in spite of the difficulty presented by the floppy tethers.

This helps much more than a little! Thanks again, and for the translation from the forum post, also. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for this suggestion, WaitakKaure! Much appreciated! I'll give it a go sometime soon to see if my own browser has a similar feature. Thanks again.

FWIW...with Chrome, I right click on the page and select "Translate to English". With a quick look at Firefox and IE, I didn't find that feature.

There are several add-ons for Firefox available to do this job (e.g. S3.Google Translator). I don't use IE but there seems to be the "Bing Translator".

Alternatively you can copy 'n' paste the link to a web-page into Google Translate. This works Browser independent.
