PETZL Vertex

I was just thumbing through my new B**ley's (bad word around here? /forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif)catalog and saw a new helmet by Petzl. Its called the Vertex. Looks like it could be a little beefier than the Ecrin. Anybody using one yet. I want a new helmet 'cause I wear one of those clunky Stihl forestry ones.

We received some samples from Petzl. They're nice helmets. It seems to me like they're an upgrade to the Ecrin series. Like the Ecrin series, the have 3 models, the Vented (=to Roc), the Best, and the ST. I have not given the helmets a thorough look yet, but what I noticed very quickly was the new suspension system. You can really get the fit you want with this helmet. It also has suspension dial in the back, which isn't new, but I like it anyway. The other thing I noticed is that the vented model has vent blocks built into the helmet, so you can close up the vents on a cold day, without have to jam external pieces in there.

A few places have already started advertising the helmets, but they will not be available until February.

Only bad words around here far as I can tell are a few of the four-letter variety. Watch, I'll prove it....

Arboristsite Baileys go check out butch's new website, which is in direct competition with this one, mark never beat me in a footlock race!

When I was at Expo I donned the helmet. The suspension was a bit different than the Ecrin. The helmet seems like it might become a real favorite.

A while ago when I was investigating hearing protection I found out that earmuffs could have up to a 10% reduction in their noise attenuation when worn over glasses. That got me to favoring plugs. Before I made the transition I started wearing the Peltor muffs with the red spacer. I think the NRR on that model was around 29dB. Having a helmet that won't have to be cocked up to clear the top of the muffs is a great feature.

Nick,

You had better watch your mouth. You could be on the tip of the list for banning /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Too early to give a value judgement. Right now it looks a tiny bit "better"

DO I HAVE TO SHOUT TO GET YOU TO HEAR!!! /forum/images/graemlins/smilie_schreck.gif /forum/images/graemlins/smilie_schreck.gif /forum/images/graemlins/smilie_schreck.gif

Okay, okay, okay, I took the earplugs out! Quiet down in here!

And I must admit that I didn't look at sean's post before I asked if they were "just" different. From the sounds of it, they are better indeed. If only just slightly.

I have the old style petzl yellow best and i was wondering if muff and face is ok when climbing and about weight and bulkyness. Some times the earbands get in the way.

hi guys, we have started trialing the helmets at the company i work for her in nz, so far they have been good, they are light and fit well on you head and are very adjustable, but no quite as good as the old ones im told. The only problem we have found is the grade 5 earmuffs we use are quite bulky and unbalance the helmet. We have also tried other muffs but the helmet becomes quite big on your head as it is quite wide and can be a problem in tight crotches. This means that it would probly be good for those out there that use plugs and it seems better designed for this. Otherwise it is a good, durable, light helmet which is a good price compared to other brands.

I use the Vertex. I like the easy adjuster and the vents.

The muffs don't close down over the eye protection as much as I'd like. I use muffs while I am in the tree. I do a combinatin of ear plugs & muffs when I am on the ground bucking for longer periods of time.--Problem solved. A good helmat.

been using the Vertex vent (in black) for over a year and love it. i have it fitted with sordin exc 24Db muffs which are realy comfy, the only problem that i've found is that it needs to be put in the truck/storage upside down or the adjuster at the back of the neck bends out of shape, and makes it uncomfortable for the first ten minutes of use.

judge, why do you think Petzl designed a helmet in black?

Seems that the best color would be a bright white, yellow or orange, but black!

Was this helmet originally designed with tree work in mind?

If you are up way in the tree and the groundie has a black helmet on with lets say a dark green t-shirt and there is a significant understory of shrubs and small trees your not gonna find it easy to see them.

I think i'll stick to white.
