I need a replacement buckle for my leg loop. Petzl's website was kind of a dead end. Anybody know how to get replacement parts?

I did a search but couldn't find any threads about petzl parts, if I missed something let me know.

Thanks

I was actually looking for some replacement petzl stuff last week. The dead end at their website happened to me too. I found the pdf they used to have but it didn't have much in the way of parts. I'd call their customer service number (801)926-1500

From what I understand Petzl will replace an part for a charge. But the hang up is that you have to send the harness to them so they can replace the part themselves. The only replacement part for the sequoia harnesses are the bridge and the bridge ring. Hope this helps.

rockettree,

IF you are looking for the grey bit of plastic with the yellow spring loaded tab attached, I went through this with Petzl back in 2006. Mine popped off and I discovered a void in the plastic right where a metal tab on the structural part of the buckle is supposed to retain it. This allowed the plastic part to shift enough that the other side could escape its retaining tab.

I contacted Petzl USA. All I wanted was a replacement grey plastic bit, I would gently prise open one tab, slip in the new one and carefully crimp the tab back down.

Nope, they insisted I ship the harness to somewhere in Illinois or Michigan where they would replace the entire buckle, which would require re-sewing.

So, with a V-Block, bench-vise, brass drift and an 8 ounce hammer, I just put the defective Petzl FAST buckle plastic bit back in and carefully persuaded the retaining tabs on both sides to move about 2 mil toward centre. Never popped off again.

So, if that's your situation, I hope you still have the escaped plastic piece. I was lucky, it popped of in a tree on about the saddles fourth climb, but my eagle eyed groundie picked it out of the debris for me.

If that's not your situation, ignore this entire blowfestration.

Northwind

Unfortunately I no longer have it but I'm kicking myself for not thinking of that Northwind. I had it for a week or two after it popped off, I tried a bit of glue but only got another week out of that solution. Now I gotta ship it somewhere? Bummer! I don't exactly have another laying around either.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer but I'll ask anyway: could I climb in a competition without the latching part of the buckle? I climb without it at work with no problems, only popped off once, but I reckon it's a pretty slim chance it would pass gear check. Anybody know for sure?

With warranty issues like this I have had Petzl ship me a replacement harness while mine was being repaired. Of course it was charged to a credit card until such time as the items were exchanged or a decision to just replace instead of repair was made.

While I applaud Northwind's ingenuity and skill, better to give it to the manufacturer so that failures and defects are documented. It may just help in redesigns or at the least id a defect that may be found in a component. If we're not giving the feedback to the manufacturer then it's hard for them to improve or at the least be held liable for a defective product.

i had an stripped bridge ring on my petzl, and they no longer sell replacement rings. you have to ship it to them, the customer rep said that i would have to ship it to petzl hq, pay for shipping both ways and pay for them to install the ring. i also didn't have a back up so i just bought a pair of steel tree austria shackels as a replacements. i find it kind of fishy that they use to sell the rings, give you the tool, and instructions to replace the bridge. they wouldn't just sell me a ring to install myself, but they think its just fine for us to disassemble and replace the bridge? so if any one needs a replacement ring i have the good one stashed in a box some where.

good luck with the buckle issue

treehumper,

This was discussed over the phone, but the border between us and the customs and duty would have made it too complicated, not impossibly complicated, but real slow. I had trees to climb the next day.

Agreed! At Petzl's request, I e-mailed a series of digital photos to the head of their customer response unit. Got a thank-you email back, aknowledging the manufacturing flaw, and a statement cautioning against my decision to proceed with personal modifications that absolved them against future failure.

Fair Enough.

Now, that's the way to proceed.
Petzl has to protect themselves.
Petzl has the best interest of the 'end user' in mind.
Why not send it back to the manufacturer and let them correct the problem?

And, to answer the question regarding "will it be allowed in competition?" The harness has to be in the condition it was when purchased from the manufacturer. Whether or not the inspector catches it, that's the question.

Yeah, border crossing is an issue. It would be nice if they set up some sort of exchange system that didn't involve all that. My problem was one I could work with until the replacement arrived. In your case obviously not possible.

Since they acknowledged the flaw would they be willing to do a warranty repair (replacement of the defective part)? You could wait until the temporary harness arrived before shipping out your harness.
