Petzl ASCENTREE

This is just my take, but if you're looking to use ascenders in foot locking, go for the new CMI EXPTWIN Ascender. The double cam, single handle ascender. The ergonomics are way better, plus its a better all around ascender. The Petzl(and similar dual handle ascenders) tweak your wrists at an odd angle, which can add up to sore/painful wrists when you're foot locking. The CMI is just a better all around ascender. From ergonomics to how the rope can't pop out of the frame.

I'm not sure I'll have enough strength in one arm to begin with, maybe after alot of practice.

[/ QUOTE ]... exactly what makes the double handle sweet , If I have a groundworker I can use both arms to pull up while the groundworker advances the slack in the line through the GriGri

classic you still use both hands. do small short locks at first then work your way into aggressive flocking my grandmaw could footlock 1or2 feet at a time

I think maybe you two are talking about two different things, but I do see what both of you are talking about and appreciate the advice.

I am looking for a dual cam ascender and because I am just learning to static foot lock(climbing 2 sides of the same line) I think I want 2 handles due to lack of muscles in the necessary areas.

of corse she is 6'1" tall and 220lbs of solid muscle and retired from the ironworkers in 1996. she still holds the column climbing record in georgia 50' in 5.8 seconds, she set that in 1988. she started working iron in 1943 at the towards the end of wwII, i think she is 85 now. when she retired the local set her a column to climb in the backyard to stay in shape. they say she was the best iron connector in the southeast.

nah you just switch sides and grab the bottom of the ascender. trust me when it comes time to pass a limb and your knuckles aren't all skinned up you'll thank me for telling you to get the cmi. or you could just get a top set of mar bars these protect your hand from tree abuse too

I've got to disagree about the CMI ascenders. I used an expedition twin (the dual handled, single rope model) for a year and a half before getting fed up with it. On tight braid ropes it often doesn't catch, and the problem got worse as the teeth wore. It even slipped on my poison ivy.

I also understand that in drop tests, the petzl teeth are kinder to the rope by loading the core and cover equally. The CMI has less aggressive teeth which won't load the core causing the cover to fail in shock load situations.

Seriously, if you want mine I'd be willing to trade for a couple biners. That's how much I don't like the CMI design. Haven't used the ascentree, but in general I think petzl handled ascenders are pretty well designed.

I use the Petzl Ascentree every time I prune. I never footlock, only SRT and the Ascentree is my ascender of choice.

No issues with at all, and I highly recommend it.

just get a spliced footlocking cord. i prefer it over ascenders. with your arms up above your head measure from your waist to your hands. thats the length you need.

[/ QUOTE ]I have one already, I plan on using it as a backup to the ascender. my problem is I'm not as light as most climbers and I haven't developed the strength to hold onto just the rope.

classic,
i understand your plight. I weigh 200 lbs without gear. I picked up the CMI Single handed (you still can use both hands) double line ascender and its sweet. You shouldnt need arm strength anyhow. Its all legs and abs. Your arms should not be quivering tired after foot locking. If they are, then your doin it way wrong. To be honest I only footlock short distances anyhow (maybe 30 feet, anything over that and I use foot ascenders)
just practice. I am not good at it myself, but it feels great to get into a tree quick and easy after a short footlock.
goodluck
