Penn-Del 44th Annual Shade Tree Symposium

Was I the only one highly disappointed in this show??

With all the hipe on this thread I thought I was going to something. Turned out to be a wasted 2 hour ride.

What was the best part of it? The worst?

Did you fill the evaluation form up with your comments?

You are correct. Tuesday afternoon was a disappointment. I am guessing that because of the threat of bad weather a lot of the vendors packed up super early and took off.

The scheduled was changed from former years and the tree worker sessions were held in the expo center in the morning. Due to some late shows by presenters all the material promised was not covered. We did, however, cover some good things, just not as much as hoped.

I second Guy's comment. Please forward an honest, well though out evaluation to the Penn Del Chapter. Their web site (listed in the first post on this thread) has contact info. If that is impossible, post as you wish here and I will forward the info along.

Thanks,

Tony

Hey Tony,
Just wanted to thank you for your presentations both days. I enjoyed your style and content. Unfortunately, I was hoping to get more info on rescues.

I am a certified mountain guide turned tree worker and have a general idea of some of the theories behind vertical rescues, but would really like to get some rescue courses with trained instructors...any thoughts on rescue workshops in the area?

I also noticed that you need to have prior experience with rescues in order to even think about taking the Tree Worker/Climber Specialist cert. I noticed that you are a certified Tree Worker/Climber Specialists...any info you could pass on for the course/exam?

I need to chat with the ISA to see I qualify since I have only about 2 months climbing and working in trees, but at least 8 years climbing and teaching rock climbing for PSU.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

Thanx for the vote of support. I in turn appreciate your time and effort to attend and then listen. Not an easy task and one many are unable to do or struggle with greatly.

Yes, is was unfortunate about not getting into the rescue info more than we did. It is, however, a double edged sword. On one hand we could have covered some good info. On the other, we could never have covered enough in that setting! The dichotomy of trade shows and seminars.

As for programs in the area, I am unaware of any in the near future, but I look to get something going next year when my schedule may allow it. I'll post any thing I develop or discover on the BUZZ of course.

As for the tree worker exam. Well. . . Guy's advice is the best; get info straight from the source. It is a good exam and practical test. Any thing it lacks is really up to the student to fill in.

Don't read too much into the testing itself. It is not very demanding and any climber with reasonable skill and knowledge after a few months good experience in the industry should be able to pass no worries.

Thanx again and let me know if I may be of more help in the future.

Tony
