pantin foot ascender

Matt,
It is a fantastic tool but it can make you a bit lazy in my opinion. I have one and I love it. I use it for a lot of stuff I single line with it using it in conjunction with a petzl hand ascneder or also sometimes for climbing drt with a micro pulley. The only downfall is it's a little hard at first to get started since there's not much weight feeding down through the cam. After you get a little ways up you're ready to roll. If you footlock you can put one foot on top of the other to simulate using both feet to footlock.

Pantins can be incorporated into SRT systems, or quite simply used with a normal Ddrt tree climbing set up to give you extra help pulling down; if your rope was hanging away from the stem and you were not using the tree to put your feet on/against as an aid to thrusting.

I like your choice of sign in names...Matt P...that's got a good ring to it...mmm...sounds kinda familiar!

Welcome to the Buzz Matt P

MattB haha thanks,
the pantin looks like i good tool, im looking for somthing that will work away from the stem,i use a blakes at the moment but a lot of work! thanks matt

The Pantin [French for puppet] is a great tool!

Using it will reduce the wear and tear on your knees and hips. Much better ergonomics to have your leg move up and down instead of cranking out to the side like in footlocking. Cross footing the left on top of the right will give you more easier movement up the rope.

Be sure to keep the Pantin positioned like in the picture. Snug the strap and adjust the stirrup so that the rope exits the P just behind the knob of your ankle bone. This will reduce ankle roll which will harm your ankle.

I think you will like it.

I'm odd man out here. I started climbing using a Pantin... and it works just like the other guys say. It's a good ascender w/ a couple of minor kinks.

But after learning to footlock I was soooo happy to leave the ascenders on the ground. That's two ascenders and a lanyard replaced by a 5' Prusik cord. The less crap I have on me when I'm climbing, the easier it is to work.

So, I'm not knocking the Pantin, I have no intention of ditching mine... but for now, I'm using boots on rope.

and then youll start getting older and you knees will start feeling wierd and out of alignment and those acenders will suddenly seem more apealling.
Honestly I have never tried the pantin myself, I always thought they were for the poor souls with difficulty footlocking. There is not a single mechanical divice in my bag, I have always been a snob that way. I learned to climb in the school that one should be able to safely climb with only a rope (rope made harness, no carabiners etc.)

Now, after a blown out knee, getting to near broke because of it, all those accenders are starting to look real nice.

I'm just a young pup here but I figure the ascenders make life easier and if that will help in longevity of my climbing then why not spend a little extra money on gear now and try some things out and go from there. If i can spend 55 bucks on a pantin and it save me some wear and tear on my body and not have to miss as many days for injuries then so be it. Plus I feel using the pantin and other ascenders I'll be climbing a lot longer. Plus it was neat seeing Ronnie use it in conjuction with his system at the masters challenge to basically walk on up the tree.

No arguements there. I still need to add that piece of gear to my bag.

What, your brown paper bag?

The Pantin is a great labor saving device, Just remember though if your top ascender pops out for whatever reason, then your gonna be hanging upside down by your foot. Hopefully you wont smash your skull against the stem when you swing down with great force.

I stopped using my Pantin years ago..........when I discovered that the regular Petzl ascenders make a far safer system when climbing SRT.

I love my Pantin when I use it. Sometimes I forget its in the bag.

Grover, the Pantin isn't supposed to be used as a means of connecting yourself to the rope, it's supposed to be used on top of some kind of friction hitch. Seems to me you where using it incorrectly, thinking it's a means of attachment.

I know the Pantin is not PPE but if you use it with the Ascension as you are supposed to, and the Ascension flicks out or becomes detached from the rope for whatever reason then you're only gonna be attached to the rope via the Pantin and you're gonna be hanging upside down, thats if the Pantin will hold you.

From personal experience I find that when climbing SRT I will always use the Ascension ascenders(right and left) cause if one of them slips out or fails then you will be still be hanging right way up sitting in your harness.

Tom, like the photo, I'm glad you showed it as it should remind everyone that the Pantin should only ever be worn on the RIGHT foot.

How are you guys using the Pantin if not with Ascensions above or similar Jumars etc?

if your hand ascender pops off the rope, you'll be hanging by your backup, not the pantin. Do you climb SRT without having the ascension backed up?

I use a micrograb above my Ascension, attached by prussik cord to the top holes in the Ascension.

I have seen a few climbers just use the single Ascension with Pantin, no backup for the Ascension. Not good.
