pantin foot ascender

Dick Head! Long time no read! LOL

I was wondering when you were gonna bob to the surface again! Don't be such a stranger!

The minimalist Pantin substitute

Whenever I'm tempted to plunk down cash on a Pantin I remind myself that it's so easy to do a single foot footlock on the tail for DdRT and you can use either your left or right foot unlike the Pantin.

Here's a thread with the full description, look for Single Footloop Technique:
Various Footlocking the tail DdRT

Pantin does make sense for backed up (2 rated ascenders above the waist) SRT configurations.

I agree that for work with in Ddrt, the amount of pressure on my legs is minimal, when I am climbing on a pulley, I am using my feet almost as a rope tender. The Pantin for that purpose seems unnecesary.
As for setting up a good SRT system to replace footlocking, I would like to try and experiment with different setups. I doubt anything can replace the ease, simplicity, and speed of footlocking but the wear on tear on the body I am realizing is considerable even though it feels easy.

It's even better when used with a handled ascender and a foot strap.
The only thing I've found better is to sit on a seat and let someone crank me into the heavens with the GRCS.

I just bought a pantin a few weeks ago but have not had the chance to use it yet.

Do you put it on first thing before your climb, and keep it on all day while you're working aloft, and just monitor the debris that gets in it?

Keep it on during the whole climb. I don't use mine that much but debris is not much of a problem.

As for hanging upside down by a Pantin........I wouldn't worry about it too much as it isn't going to happen. It will come off of the rope.

If I choose to use the pantin with the Single Rope Technique, what is a good friction hitch to use if I do not use a handled ascender?

I was thinking of using the Distel hitch.

Thanks
Chris

For ascending just about any friction hitch will work. You'll have to figure out the configuration that works depending on your weight and the cord.

Have you looked at the Three Knot System in the book On Rope?

Hi Tom,
I've looked at the book On Rope, but it has been awhile since I last reviewed it.

I usually climb with a Blake's as my friction hitch using a 5/16" Bee Line prusik chord with my split tail climbing system. I usually just use the Modified Body thrust but I want to start using the SRT.

I just wasn't sure if that line along with the Blake's and the SRT would cause the hitch to tighten too much and give me trouble advancing up the Line? What do you think?

Thanks
Chris

Chris, I've been using the distel and it works pretty well.
What works really well for me is a double handled ascender with a loop going down to my left foot and the pantin on the right foot.
This way you are using both legs to climb with on srt.
This is then backed up with the distel which allows you to bail out in a hurry if need be.
It doesn't hurt to leave it on unless you are working some tight crotches.

If you're using smaller dia. cord for SRT you're sailing in lonely water. Not many climbers have ventured to experiment with this setup. Not that I think it's dangerous at all. There isn't alot of experience built up yet. You might try using a stiffer/springier cord and making more wraps to keep the hitch from biting down so hard.

Tom; Why is that?
I prefer a smaller cord for better gripping due to the excess weight on the single line.
4/2 is too much and 4/1 is just right for my weight using ultra tech.

The Pantin [French for puppet]

Really? I love the image that it conjures!

I always just assumed that it was a variation on the english word "pants" since it goes on the leg. That seems to be Petzl's usual source for names.

I use the VT hitch all the time for SRT. I also like the match up with the Pantin, works great for me. Plus not that I think alot of the older guys are going to like hearing it or seeing it, but in case of a problem on the way up I come down on it also( while on SRT ). I dont think it work though safely with alot of weight on it a.k.a I tried it and it dont work.
