Owner/operators...balancing time ???

Re: Owner/operators...balancing time ? ATTENTION!!

Balancing life and business really can be a challenge in this industry. If you don't have someone like a wife or girlfriend helping you, then here are some other ideas:

A bookkeeper to take care of the books. They can come in or you can send them the info weekly, biweekly, monthly or quarterly. That may take a load off.

Hire an answering service: They can answer your phones and set up appointments for you.

You may want to consider changing the layout of your work week: work the jobs 4 days a week and leave one day for pricing/office stuff. Wednesdays are often good for this. This may seem to be one of the hardest things to do, but if you are not booked out so that you work 5 days a week 52 weeks a year (which realistically, how many of us are, especially if we're working on our own) then it's possible. I've found that customers are more concerned about having a date given them as to when their job is going to be done then getting it done that one day sooner. Exceptions will always apply.

That's what I used to do untill the business go to the point it wasn't feasible anymore. Now it's evenings and weekends.

If you feel like being clever, consider sending a note off line to the person.

Great words of wisdom Tom and a job well done. I have tried the above mentioned method but the recipient just openly posted the content ... it was a personal email too and nothing to do with TB.

I see the thread is still having difficulty staying on track.

I went out and did a quote today being Sunday, got the job but just shows you never really knock off do you?

Best left ignored. ;^)

Is Ekka the same guy that made that educational video of for the kids in the junior school?

He seems a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde character to say the least!

Re: Owner/operators...balancing time ? ATTENTION!!

Well, the topic of the thread,if I recall correctly was business and the running or managing of same.Good topic.

I've seen in my little sheltered life many very knowledgable people,in their own chosen profession or craft that were not business minded.More times than not this was just a recipe for diaster and business failings.

I myself have never really owned a businees, per say but have been in a position of authority regarding the operation of same.My suggestion is to operate your business in a professional manner.Mind your P's and Q's regarding employees and customers and treat all with respect.Without both good staff and customers, you have no business.

Now regarding businees,a word of caution to mind your own.It is not in anybodys best interest to down grade anothers .It will come back to haunt you,I've seen it happen and history repeats itself, trust me.

As a further note, please take note of the site you are in.Treebuz!Whatever bag and baggage from other sites should have nothing to do on this site nor this site to others.I know that factually speaking however that it does occur. In light of that ,before I add something untastefull to this site I have chosen, once more to use the ignore function as provided for in this forum.Cyber space exile.

Provocative hey? And what is the above on 2 counts?

Nothing wrong with the avatar, we are on level 4 water restrictions with only 23% water supply left in out damns.

Over 1 million households and 2.5million people not allowed to use their hose... hence, no hosers by council order.

Re: Owner/operators...\'Think before you post!!!\'

Good Grief!!!

Before you post...think...'What am I saying that has anything to do with the thread?'

Would you guys take your playground feuds out to the playground, PM or email and keep them out of this thread!!!

This sort of behavior is what has driven other arbo discussion forums out of control. Knock it off!!!

Yah, it can be tough. Is it just you or do you have some guys that work for you?

[/ QUOTE ]

I am guessing your asking me this...it just alittle bit confusing trying to follow stuff in this thread.

I work with 2 other guys. We can all climb and do most trees, but one is moving to NJ. I have picked up and newbie, but will take time to train him. The other guy in my older brother, but he wants to cut back to 2-3 days a week. But he does help me out by returning phone calls and scheduling appts.

I was actually looking into to adding a second crew come spring. But due to my one guy leaving etc, I think I will wait till later in year or so.

Re: Owner/operators...balancing time ? ATTENTION!!

It's a good idea to have a really solid crew before adding a second.

Maybe a good place to start would be to work out a list of who would work in your ideal company. What job roles would there be. Then write out descriptions of each job. Responsibilities, hours, etc. Choose what role you want to play and then start working towards that. In the beginning you can end up doing a little bit of everything and then get stuck in that - 3 people all doing a little bit of everything. Create defined roles and then have people stick to them (though some will be taking on the roles of 1.5 to 2 or 3 defined rolls in the beginning). It will change as you grow and you can afford to hire a person for each defined role, but it's probably better to get that down before you add more people to the business.

Re: Owner/operators...balancing time ?

I hear what your saying. Let me explain some more at what I was going to do. Since I had basically 3 climbers. I was going to hire 2 groundmen. The second crew would have been only part time. They would have been doing most of the pruning work (thinning, reducutions, etc). While the full time crew would have been focusing on removals (and deadwooding for some municipalities).

I would be working on the part time crew, and ofcourse helping on harder removals. This would free up more days during the reg work week for estimating and office work.

But since I lost my climber (because he had to move). I need to adjust/put-off my plans some.

Paul, just do like the rest of us and put treeco on ignore.

[/ QUOTE ]

If you put the 2 main instigators here on ignore... the thread actually makes sense... as do some of the other threads they have "contrinbuted" to.
