OLDS-Overhead Lowering...

Just skip past 1st 30 seconds and the last couple of minutes.

There are many ways (& reasons) to lower a limb solo. The video below uses a Belay Spool, a Rope Jack and a 'French' Prusik.

Solo Limb Lowering

1st came the Belay Spool for consistent friction;
2nd the Prusik for controlled lowering;
3rd the Rope Jack for pretensioning;
4th, hopefully, will be a release. For now, an un-trained groundy is still required.

That worked but it looked like a portawrap/redirect pulley would of done the work of the spool/prusik more efficiently.

Basically, you're right. Either would work. But...the OLDS is far superior to a bollard in the tree. There's no chance of throwing off a turn of rope when the limb moves away is, to me, the biggest difference.

When I needed to lower things by myself there are two ways that I snubbed off the load. First, if I was near the OLDS I'd tie a slipped half hitch and jam it against the body of the OLDS. After the limb was cut I'd slip the tie-off and lower. If I wasn't near the OLDS I snub off the rope around another limb or the trunk.

The times would do that is when the ground crew was busy getting limbs cleaned up on the ground. I didn't need to take one away to lower. This would make OLDS a trained groundie...who wasn't paid!

If you didn't have an OLDS a bollard could be used. I wonder how much they weigh compared to the OLDS. I know that the OLDS is much easier to drag around the tree though.

Nice vid!

Ricky,

Are you suggesting using a F8 for over-head rigging/lowering?

If so, I'll tell you that the don't work anywhere near as well as the OLDS/BS.

~~~They're not rated for the loads that might be expected in rigging.
~~~They hockle the rope.
~~~Trying to yard rope backwards through an F8 is almost impossible. Doing it with the OLDS/BS is almost as easy as going back over a pulley.
F8's for rigging is comparing apples to antelopes when considering what the OLDS/BS will do.
Tom I don't use them but saw in some of the info that they are used for heavy loads. when I need alittle extra I just wrap the rope around a stub or trunk. Good to know though.
Well Hey what do I know? Just look at the category it's under. Tom you should call them.
Category? Descenders are for the climber descending. Lowering devices listed on the 'rigging' category are for lowering wood.
"You should call them" ???
Ricky you may try not to be such a smarta$$ so often. It really makes for an unpleasant environment.
From the website
Although not designed as such, the Belay-Spool can also function as an effective lowering device and thereby greatly simplify the rigging requirements of an operation. Personnel in industry who from time to time may be called on to accomplish rescues of their fellow workers can benefit from this added simplicity. This is also true for the fire service, especially when rope rescue scenarios are infrequent. In addition the speed of which they can be rigged can only be a benefit to the patient.
