ol timer climbers show them pics

Not sure but if I thought my back hurt now, being a production climber using a rope harness would have me crying everyday.
and old timer i knew (RIP Jim Malcahy) told me, while laughing pretty hard about it, that his ass cheeks had crazy callused marks from rope saddles back in his day.

while i was in college i went and visited a friend at his school and had a climbing line in my car. thinking i was joe cool i thru it over a limb and set up a rope saddle while we were drinking outside. when i woke up i had bruises from sitting in it for a while and was uncomfortable sitting in uncushioned seats. not sure if i woulda been able to hack it back then.

back when men were made of steel and ships were made of wood.
back when men were men and sheep were scared.

An old timer told me molasses was used to coat the old hemp ropes.

Never heard of that one. Although sugar is a preservative, it would be sticky and attract all manner of bugs. Would also be food for biological (composting) action on natural fibers. Seems like a bad idea to me.

They had a lengthy process for breaking in their ropes. Not sure about bugs, I will have to ask him. I should also ask if I can photograph some of his old pics. He showed me a cool pic of their tree truck that was an old power wagon with a winch on the front the size of a chipper drum.

...an old power wagon...

I had a friend down in Mississippi whose father did a lot of weird stuff for a living... including fishing old growth cypress logs and tourists' vehicles out of the swamp. He also cut firewood back in there, and he had this old WW2 Dodge Power Wagon military ambulance he converted into a wrecker/utility truck. It looked like a cross between the Beverly Hillbillies and Mad Max technology. Huge split rim wheels with tractor tires... but damn, that thing would go through mud 4' deep and had a winch with 300' of cable on it. Very strange vehicle. But then, he was a very strange guy. In 1973 or 1974, maybe, I watched them drag a new Cutlass Supreme out of the swamp with this beast. They had bought the title from the insurance company for $800 and when we got there, all you could see was a little bit of the roof and the back bumper sticking out of the mud and water. Three days later, they had it all cleaned up and you'd never know it had been driven off the road into the swamp. I bet they made a killing on it.

OK, here is beauty. my dad got this pic from an old time bush pilot in Peru. I am guessing the pic was taken in the 70's. The back of the picture says the tree was 200' tall. I think the tree was probably a Kapok tree since they are the tallest in the Amazon. They lite rally jut out above the rest of the Jungle as if to say they are king.

Man those Kapok trees have some crazy root flares. Maybe the largest and widest spreading flares I've seen. And there's hardly any width to the buttress roots at all. They might be 8'(ft) tall but only a few inches at the top.

So what's the dude doing? Trying to cut that monster down with a Machete?

Those people are tough and fearless. They have no fear of heights and little fear of pain. To them our jobs probably look cushy. I have little doubt that he felled the tree.

The crown on a Kapok tree can be over 100' wide.

If you zoom in on his axe it looks like it might have a stone head. While I was there I only remember seeing steel axe heads.

i have. somehow i didnt pack sneakers one of the last times i went and had some serious problems trying to find a pair my size. beautiful country tainted by people who do not value its beauty. at least thats my observation while visiting places that arent exactly the tourist attractions of the nation .
but most of the people are some hard workin SOBs. whether or not everything done to get ahead is ethical or not, different story, but they dont stop, they just do
