So Jersey, are you climbing??? If the "old guys" toe that he just had surgery on is up to it, we'll see you there!

[/ QUOTE ]

The "old guy" and I plan on driving down. "the Kid" is scheduled to compete for Michigan, so better be there. He and his wife are leaving earlier to check on their place they still have in SC and visit some friends for a bit. Smart enough to get away from this cold and snow for a bit!! Should see you in a couple of weeks then!

Just saw on FB that SRT will not be allowed at the NATCC.

That seems strange to me, considering SRT has been allowed at more and more TCCs over the past few years.

I understand that Tim Bushnell made the ruling based on an interpretation of a rule, but I'm not sure which rule they are talking about.

Any thoughts on this?

.

2.2.29 Contestants may work from a static ascending line provided that a separate, approved overhead climbing system is anchored to the static ascending line. Neither an engaged, frame loaded toothed ascender nor a cam-loaded non-toothed ascender shall be permitted within this anchoring system. Fall-protection anchoring systems must include an approved stopper knot, or hitch on the static line below the anchoring system, unless the climbing system is directly connected to an approved knot in the access line. Techniques for working from a static line with an anchoring system attached to the static line must be demonstrated prior to use and during gear inspection, and must have prior approval of the head technician. (2010)

I interpret the rule as:
you can climb off an ascent line if you attach the climbing system to it safely. dont climb off ascenders, use back ups, etc.

A very good rule but not applicable.

This is one judge's interpretation of current rules. The technique of single line climbing has been allowed in many competitions and many states, including
ITCC RI 2009, Charlotte 2008,2009 (by multiple climbers),Michigan (twice) Pen Del (east and west), New Jersey, Ohio, Kentucky, Texas, Geezers, warren Wilson, and possibly others that I don't know about.

It has been ruled to be within the rules by many respected judges who know the rule book very well. This does NOT set a precedent for other competitions.

It does very clearly state that the overhead climbing system must be cleared by the head technician. That makes it a comp by comp decision. The judge in this particular case did not approve of SRT as a climbing system. He did not understand it well enough to make an informed enough decision. Things take time.

There are no rules regarding SRT as a work system whatsoever. The rules regarding ascent lines and ascenders are all they have to work with and are pretty much unrelated.

In the absence of rules, it is up to the head judge/Technician of each competition to make a decision. Lots of differences in opinions out there. I don't have a problem with that. I am just glad I did not get down there and find out.

We do need to get some rules set in place fast. I do not even think the current rules in place need to be amended. This is not a case of rules violation it is a case of rules non-existence.

This should be moved to rules and regs section so everybody can plan.

Not to derail the discussion guys, but the long range weather is calling for Sunny and 67 degrees on Saturday and Mostly Sunny and 66 on Sunday. Again, I have ordered perfect days.

Excellent post, You make valid points without adopting the us vrs. them attitude. If you want to see change them be an advocate for it!

yeah kevin good post and maybe you could demo your system with the powers that be and familiarize them with SRT canopy working systems
