the spur on my Geckos angled out sharply. The point of the spur was at least 1" further away from the shank than the spur point on my Bashlin's. So when standing in the spurs the point of the spur on the Geckos held my entire foot farther away from the trunk. My boots points of contact with the trunk was either my toe or my heel- I had to rock back and forth. Using a traditional spur my foot has two points of contact, my heel and toe.
Becouse the Geckos held my foot farther away from the trunk it placed more stress on my ankle.
Got it?

Snarf,

Your observation is the same one that I've had of Klien's. I never liked how far the edge of my boot was from the tree.

I only spent a little time on a pair of Geckos. They were nice. I think that the design of the spike kept my foot closer. It is so much smaller in diameter that it sunk deeper I think.

I can't get use to long gaffs on thin skinned trees.
Having the gaff buried in the wood with my boot resting against the tree gives me the best stability and comfort.
My Buckinghams came with the 2 1/2"tree gaffs and I changed them to the 1 3/4" pole gaffs.
I wouldn't consider buying climbers with fixed gaffs for tree work.
