New to Kbooms. Tips?

Out of all the people that have come out here to watch my kbooms work, none have bought stick booms. 80 percent have bought kbooms. Some looked at the price of all the equip and pushed more money into their PHC divisions instead. (new spray truck is very cheap comparatively:)

Good topic Jesse.

And it sounds like I'll have to un-ignore Old Dirty and start to read his posts once again. Nice!

I've never used a Kboom, but I've had a good grasp on what it would be like making the picks with one. Frankly, a lot of "no brainer" picks I do with crane work, I set up the rigging visualizing using a Kboom. (Practice for my own Kboom).

The thing that I don't like is, there seems to be a little more up and down climbing to set the multiple slings. And that adds time.

As with most who use a load line, on a stick boom, it is easy to use 1 choker most of the time. Using 2 is satisfactory as well. It is rare (if the picks are planned well in advance) to use/need more than 2 with a stick boom.

I LOVE THE BAGS. Loading buckets of stump grindings is just somthing my body wont do anymore. Jeremy let me use the crane to move these fully loaded bags to the Loader yesterday and I could not wipe the smile from my face. Again, Thanks Eric D.

It is the same with a kboom. You dont need to use multiple slings because it is a kboom. No different

I was under the impression that most Kboom owners didn't want anything hitting the boom, thus the multiple slings.

But, I suppose that is for further picks.

Close picks can have longer slings to avoid contact with the boom.

Or, is it not really as much of a concern as some would think?

Well you're right, you really don't want anything touching the boom, but the number of slings won't change that, properly placed slings will.

Where the situation allows I hang a 10' sling from the hook then hang my 6' slings from that.

I've only had to replace one jib pipe on the 55 ton in 9 yrs. and one on the 175 ton in 4 yrs. My old 30 ton hiab was a monthly pipe or cyl...or something major nightmare. David J stopped by last wk. One of the things he commented on was he thought they were more fragile than what he saw. (picked 10 lil pines knocking 2 inch limbs off with the boom and using the nose of the jib to push a flopper maple from the same set up)

Sweet. I'd love to have a Kboom just to see what creative ideas come to mind when in different scenarios. I wouldn't have thought of that (not ever used one).

Mike was not afraid to use it. He has streaks from limbs all up and down the sides of the boom, cylinders, lines; it was good to see how tough it was.

alright....

were these guys the type looking to stay small 2 or 3 man crew and have a vehicle with multiple talents or were they guys with dedicated log trucks and bucket crews running a few trucks......

i could absolutely see myself if i was a small company looking to go for it all grabbing classic's setup and calling that my bucket truck/log truck/crane and being absolutely psyched to do it all. all you'd need is a big chipper and chip truck and you could take over your market.....

but for pound for pound production can you honestly tell me you could keep up with a same load chart stick crane?

again, asking in a manner as to keep the conversation moving along.

Ill say it...my work was smoother and easier with a stick crane but the advantages out weigh that in my opinion. We can set up in tighter spots. It can move me about the tree more efficiently. Im sure there are more advantages that the operators could discuss. Your OK Oldirty. A bit too nice for my liking though. You had a reputation thats being destroyed by your civility. Knock it off.

i mean if we being honest then your opinion doesn't really mean much to me because of watching the videos and pictures you've been in i see that you have a long way to come. along way before i ask you of your opinion. in fact you should be asking me what your opinion should be...

and that is why your opinion of that kboom doesn't count either because you still rub one out to the paint job at the end of the day. that and you've never worked with one before so what could you possibly know....
