New Spray Rig Specifications

We're getting ready to start looking for a small spray rig for ornamentals and have no idea what to consider in regards to pumps and guns.

We will continue to sub out whatever mature shade tree applications we run into but we are hoping take care of the ornamentals under our care. That would primarily be flowering trees under 20 feet tall with some 35 foot spruce, scots or austrian pines tossed in for good measure.

What sort of pumps should we look at? PSI ratings? How about flow ratings?

what are the pros and cons of the different agitation systems?

How about a basic application gun? We have no idea what to look for there. As mentioned a reach of 40 feet is the most we will need.

Lastly tank size? We are probably looking at only doing a dozen or so trees at a time and mostly for leaf fungus treatments. I was thinking something in the 35 gallon range?

Is there any problem mixing less than a full tank of product?

Give these guys a call. http://www.contree.com/

We bought this from them and it works great! We had them tweek it for our specific intended use ie they removed the boom. I think it would be a great system for what you are talking about. http://www.contree.com/photos/image_f4b35171-21.JPG

They will be able to answer all of your questions and they will hook you up. There sprayers are sold by many companies around the country as different name brands. While we were doing our research, Contree kept coming up time and time again. John Deere Landscapes sells them I know but you will be much better off ordering right from Contree and getting it shipped.

For psi I work at around 400. The Hypro model D-50 is a good pump @ about 13 GPM(?) for ornamentals. Tall tree work would need something more in the 21 to 25 GPM range. Tank size about 100. Tank mix should be good for 4 or 5 days, depending on what you use and how good the agitation is. Guns, we use the JD-9C and the FMC model 785, but we spray to 80 or 90 feet (@ 600 to 800 psi). The agitation you use is dependant on the type of products you use. WP's, EC's and flowables stay mixed real well, so jet is fine. DG's and hort oils require more active agitation.

Look in to Udor Pumps, such as, the Kappa 40. it is a great diaphram pump that runs around 12-15 gal/min, with a 20-35 feet spray. As far as tanks, that depends, 100 gal tank will limit you (i think). Two application tanks at 35 gal each (one for insecticide and one for fungicide) and a 200 gal feeder tank for water would be ideal. Jet Agitation is a must!!!!!! Spray guns, JD-9 is the classic and it is a great gun, but it will use a lot of product so look in to some of the new turbine guns on the market, spray pattern is about the same, and they use half the product.
