New Record! World's Tallest Tree

Talk of other species being 400 to 500 feet, I don't think so.

I think redwoods are pretty much the only ones capable of the 370-400 ft range. And they can do it because of the specialized needles and the heavy fog and drizzle and rain in that area.

Interesting read:

Re: New Record! World\'s Tallest Tree

that was interesting.

read most of it, (well, the beginnig part on the tall tree stories)

the one 374 foot one was probably accurate on that Eucalyptus regnans, I personally doubt the accuracy of the others, but who knows I guess.

Nice to dream about a 400 to 500 ft tree, but I don't see how a tree could get that tall. what would be the reason for it to anyway?

I've wondered if man could help one to grow really tall. Like if one was planted at the base of a cliff, keep adding supports to it as it grows up the side of the cliff so it doesn't put much growth into girth, just into height. With supports prohibiting movement/sway, it would continue to shoot up in hieght. Lots of water and good soil and 100 to 200 years of care. I wonder how high you could get a red-wood or Euc then?

The Ralph Stearns Dyer tree is 336' tall & 15 feet in diameter. The experience of climbing it with Jerry Beranek was amazing.

The story of this climb (and a couple dozen more) is on a CD-ROM called "A Tree Story", available at: A Tree Story
Or, send $18.00 to:

Thanks, Zac & treesandsurf,

I'll be attending TCI, so hopefully I'll run into someone who can give me some information about climbing the Redwoods.

Thanks, again!

If I'm still here by Jacksonville, when you get over to see them, look me up and maybe I'll take you on a tour of the ones in the north.

I was going to drive down there tomorrow, but will probably wait a few days. I get down there at least once per month.

Here's the album I started...

Redwood Forest Images

Still, images don't capture the grandeur.

If you come this way to see that forest, try and see the north Oregon coast, maybe Washington, too. There are immense trees in the coast range. It's a cool climate, so the ferns and greenery are exceptional all year.
