new purchase Stihl MS 441 or 460

Hello from the uk
smile.gif

Im going to be buying one of these saws, but on paper their specs are very similiar,

similair weight
similar power
same chain pitch
similar price

going to be running mostly a 20" bar + chain.

Which would you buy? and why have stihl made 2 such very similar saws?

thanks Mark

Get a 460. We went through the same thing recently, and the 460 is awesome!!! Though, I thought in the UK, they discontinued the 460.

On the note of why Stihl is making two very similar saws, from what I understand, the 460 will eventually be discontinued, in favor of the cleaner running 441. At least, that's how I understand it.

yeah, ive just been doing some more reading and it lloks like the 441 is replacing the 460. Do you think we will see a 641, 841? or even a 661, 881 etc? how long has the 460 been about?

im leaning more towards buying a 441, how many teeth is their on the stock sprocket? is there other sprockets with more teeth available to make it run faster??

thanks Mark

The differences between the two are major and many. I prefer the extra power of the 460, personally.

Yes you will see a 461, 661, 881. You will see a 362, and 442 before those though.

There are 7, and 8 tooth sprockets available through Stihl, and most other suppliers. You can buy 9-14Tooth through different vendors online. Anyting over a 9 tooth and you need extra links in the chain, anything over 10 or 11 tooth and the bar needs to be modified. Larger sprockets move the chain faster but rob power, food for thought.

Thanks

What are the many and major differences you speak of? because on paper they look very similiar, and i wouldnt of thought yu could notice the extra half horsepower that the 460 has

air filtration, engine design (stratified vs. non strat), shape, ply vs. metal flywheel, power 1/2 hp is a lot when talking aboout 5 hp!, anti vibe design etc etc etc.

run em both and decide for yourself!

Thanks for all your help

I just saw the video on the 441 with the Pre-separation air filtration system.

"With a new edge in chain saw technology, the MS 441 Magnum™ boasts an advanced pre-filtration system, noticeably reduced vibrations and a higher torque level over a wide RPM range. More powerful than the MS 440, this chain saw is also emissions conscious, with 10 to 20 percent less fuel consumption depending on the application"

less vibration, you have to love that!

Consensus is, the 441 is underpowered for its weight.

If quick service and parts availabiity isn't an issue, try the Solo 681 or Dolmar 7900. Both are lighter and will walk all over a 460...and, of course, a 441...and cost a lot less as well.

Like them even better than the 372 Husky, which I also prefer over the 440 or 441, and is lighter than the 460. Must be why I now have three, though two are sporting Makita's teal, off white and black colors..and are converted from the 64 cc 6401 to the 79m cc 7901.....

and they match my chip truck.

Never see any dolmars here in the uk, there is makitas for sale but never see anybody using one though. Its mainly stihl and some husky's

My 460 died a few weeks back, sad times. I love that saw, can't beat it for toughness and reliability. I inherited the saw from a previous crew who didn't love it as I did. You can't beat it's performance for the price.

I own both a 460 and a 441, use them for logging mostly, so they run a lot of hours.
The 441 is by far the most vibration free saw I've ever run.
The new turbo aircleaning system ( which Stihl stole from Jonsered, to give credit where its due!)is fantastic. When I got the 441 at the beginning of logging season, I ran it without cleaning the airfilter to see how long it would go.
It ran for 3 weeks of 7½ hr logging days in mainly beech trees before starting to gasp for air.
The 036 got a major workover and became the 361, the 046 became the 441 and now I'm just waiting for Stihl to come out with a new version of the 260. They managed to stay ahead of German emission regulations by changing the cc of the engine in the European version just enough to put it into another class, so it is good for a few years, but eventually they'll have to work it over.
I'm really looking forward to the new model.

Roger, we don't see any Dolmar,Echo, Solo or Makita in the woods here, only Stihl, Husqvarna and Jonsered ( Husqvarna in drag).
The others have always had bad reputations for reliability, I don't know if there is anything to it, or it's just superstition, but I have never seen a full time logger run them.

Little correction

Stihlsair filtration is a little different, but the major concept was Husky/Jonesered.

The 046 did not become the 441. The 044 became the 440 and then the 441. The 046 had minor changes and became the 460.

Be on the lookout for some new saws, mostly homeowner, from Stihl this late winter/early spring.

I looked at the 441 when I was picking up some bars. The price is only about 40 less than the 460. The vibration from the 460 kills my hands so I might consider the 441 the next time I am ready to buy.
