New logging show

they top out a tree to reduce the leverage and hang a block to run the sky line through.

Is this then considered a spar pole to rig from or tailhold willie?

I'm thinking that the two words can be used interchangeable kind of like feller and faller?

it would be a lift tree if its as i described. interim support would be understood also i think. a spar pole is usually at the landing (where the logs come in) and a tail hold is usually attached to a stump at the bottom of the hill.

i think i see where the confusion lies. a lift tree is rarely (if ever) at the very end. it would need to be guyed for support or the yarder would have to much leverage and just pull it over. the key was the skyline "passes through" the block on the lift tree and continues down the hill to the selected tail hold

Welcome to the New Age...

ok my paint skills lack but this is it. the red is the yarder (used to be sparpole) black is the tail hold, grey is how the skyline should run and green is how it would run with out the lift tree

Good illustration.

SPAR/SPAR TREE: A device rigged for highlead, skyline or slackline yarding.(2)

This doesn't really say where the location of the spar pole is, the assumption is, it would always be at the top.

"a device rigged" could be anywhere on site but because there is a Lift Tree it would make sense that the Spar is only at the top.

LIFT TREE: An intermediate support for skylines.(2)
