Nice path span, ever have one of those bad boys smush your crash logs in and still take out the path/sidewalk? ooooh I hate when that happens

hey mark chisholm, what the max oppening on the grapple? i'll bet there is somebody with a portable mill drooling over that phellos log! (i sell mine to port. mill owners. we don't have any production mills in my area.) got a measly 2 hundos for this log. he quartered it with a chainsaw first. (wonder how long that took!)

Mark,

Lots of good information here!

Wow, the nicest boom I've ever seen! I didn't know they made such a thing!

Awesome!

Thank you so much for sharing the information (I'm still trying to read all the info, keep losing connection due to rain and the darn dial-up internet)

THANKS!

Marcus,

Oh.... you said it.

If you are at all serious, I want to take you up on that. Well, I don't need to "run" it, but I'd REALLY like to see it and see it work.

Looks like I've pretty much made up my mind now to get a log truck first, instead of a spider-lift. The big truck will be more important first I think.

Couple questions on it:
1. I didn't see a picture of it folded up. It does fold up behind the cab, right? Grapple stay on it too? Do you have a picture?

2. You like the Sterling trucks? What made you choose it?
What do you think of International (like a 7400,7500,7600)?
I notice Cameron got a Sterling and has several also.

3. Now that you've had it one season, how do you like it? Anything you would order differently? Hows that wheelbase? Front axle a little heavy?

4. Is there a computer screen that tells the reach, max wieght possible, wieght of the load and all that? Does movement shut down if you try to pick up more than safe, or a buzzer?

5. I like idea of the speed control option on the boom movement. Do you?

Come up anytime. Hey, why not come for the Workday in Dec.?

Anyway:

Only folds up without the grapple on. When I keep it on, it looks like the attached.

So far so good. I also like Int. Go with what has good support by you.

Still great for us.

There is no screen. New ones (and larger) will have different lights/screens than ours does. It shuts down as soon as you pick too much. Then you have to retract to reset.

Absolutely! Plus the slower speeds allow larger picks.

work day in december? that info on this forum somewhere already?

"New ones (and larger) will have different lights/screens than ours does"

What do you mean, yours was NEW wasn't it? Your's an older model or something? I don't need all that stuff, shuting down good enough for me.

I don't think you attached a picture of it folded with the grapple.

okay, last question for now.

A. How fast does the boom move? Is it fast like a prentice? or is is slower like a crane?

I asked Heila/Italmec for information on the models available because the web-site doesn't have much at the moment. (also learned they make some fairly decent "spider-lifts" as well)

Oh, I was wrong, one more question.
B. Did one dealership do the whole combo for you? the truck sale and the box and boom purchase and install? Want to mention there business?

C. And yet a third question. Did you research various booms for a long time before you decided on this one?

thanks,

It was new, but now 2007 models are showing up with a light indicator or other gadgets.

It is a little slower. Not as slow as a crane, but a little slower. I think that it has to be because the tip moves much farther at the same rate since it is longer. It travels really quick when you are extended.

Yes and no. I tried to find what I wanted but it wasn't out there. So I had to custom build it. I needed to find a company that had the ability to build what I wanted. It really came down to two types - Heila and Cormach. The reason? They both had the ability to add a grapple easily enough, capacity was good, and the big reason: support was local if needed! I like Heila also because hoses and fittings are north american fittings so replacement is easy. I had other reasons why I chose Heila, but that was the biggest.

Many boom types will be very similar in comparison. You won't be able to tell why one is superior to another very easily. Try to figure out what your needs are, your budget and where it can be repaired if needed.
