New competition in town! Should I be worried?

I think with GM's trying to sell the Hummer line and all but one each of the luxury SUV plants permanently closed now, the logic behind the imagry people thought projected success and skills is now taken for greedy ignorance. $50,000 butch vehicles are a liability around these parts.

What the heck are you babbling about Wilt.

There's three definitions of "overhead!"

One involves cost/benefit analysis, another is the depth of the water one swims in, and the last, applicable here, is logic (as in: over-your-head).

Mother Teresa rode a bicycle, Madoff and Bush ride in Escalades. Who're the thieves and who's a Saint?

Davey Tree re-stocks with sharp new equipment, Tom Dunlap's rig was a converted school bus. I'd hire him anyday over the former. Even if it were for mowing my lawn or picking-up the dog poop (sorry there buddy).

Sharp new equipment sometimes makes you alot faster-you can charge less for the same job.Shovel vs stump grinder, chipper vs cutting load down with a chainsaw-dolly vs skid loader-truck vs horse and carriage.I debated about this myself and come to the conclusion with the right equipment you can complete a job 2 to 3 times faster and charge less. Now as far as driving escalades not for tree work but maybe if I was in a bullet proof one and president.I wonder If obama gets new cars or if he drives around in Bush's ole limos and escalades(do they really have escalades)or are they Clintons all stuff.Alot former Davey employees told me they really dont buy to much knew stuff-only when the got to.Have you ever seen there gear pretty primative,at least around here.I understand your point about excesss but some purchases actually do make more money save more time and preserve employees careers, not to mention boost morale and professional image.

How are you charging less for the same job? Your hourly rate would be more because you have equipment that makes you faster.

A guy with a shovel gets 25/hr, you have a machine you get 100/hr. It'll take that guy 4 hours to do what you did in an hour, you both have the same hole in the ground.

Sorry, I shoulda specified soil type.

If I doubled my equipment I'd charge 2x, not 1.5x.

I don't buy expensive equipment so I can worker cheaper. But to each there own.

Brendon the problem is alot guys charge more for less.I have other companys over bid stuff because they cant really handle the jobs.I just charge fair market value and have the equipment to handle it.Im not cheap probably right in the middle for a fully insured-certified arborist/tree worker.

I know that happens in a lot of fields, if they don't really want the job they will bid high. If the customer signs off on the work they will do the job and reap the higher return.

Is that a bad thing?

That's one of the perks of self-employment...if you don't want to do it, but are capable-make the price worthwhile.
