Negative blocking: can we find better words?

[ QUOTE ]
...
After all this thread, I'm now thinking, NEGATIVE RIGGING is the best term to use.

So "positive" rigging would be the opposite right?

For me it makes not a lot sense.

[/ QUOTE ]

It needs no opposite term, think about it. There is no rational situation where you would want to perform this task in reverse.

Oh no, I certainly do it time to time. Goes upward. More positive, right?

David,
Do you honestly? you perform this task in reverse? Sorry for being so literal but isn't the purpose of this thread just that, To have clear definition of terms?

Does anyone know where the term 'negative blocking' came from? Who invented it?

The first that I ever heard of it was on a discussion forum. I wasn't sure what it meant so I asked.

"positive" rigging would mean to me that a load is going upwards, yes. but its not anti-gravitational (at least for most of us ;) so its not the exact opposite.
it would be if "negative" rigging would mean pulling a load downwards mechanically and thats not what its about here.

I really think static vs. dynamic (for the load above or below the rigging point) describes it a lot better, even if there are other chances for misunderstandings.

I was thinking this might be positive rigging.

The x-rigging ring (could be a block) near the notch catches the small "pop up" and also acts like a control line on the butt.

My 2 cents...

"Rigging" can mean natural crotch too. Not descriptive enough.

"Blocking" implies using a block. Better.

Doesn't matter that "negative blocking" isnt understood by all. We don't know terms from other industries and don't need to. Even in tree care we have different names from different locales. Buckstrap, lanyard, etc.

You call it poop, I call it a turd, he calls it crap, we all figure it out in the end. "in the end"...guess I could've phrased that differently.

Drop Block Lowering
Drop Ring Lowering
Drop Block Rigging
Drop Blocking
The ol' Trunk section catch
Trunking...not to be confused with crunking

A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet, so lets call it "wood chunk fall rope catch through block"

To be honest I like Drop Blocking

I use butt hitching to refer to rigging without a block. Not really possible on vertical spars but more so on limb removal.

Blocking down to me refers to cutting blocks of wood. Friction catch flip rigging?

Exactly what I thought the first time I heard it. I got used to it though.
Of course, there's body thrusting. But we won't go there.

I too like the new (updated) avatar. How in the world did you do that? Stop motion picture?
