Need Some Opinions Here Guys

OK, I agree with all of the posts saying to get the degree. Not much more to add on that so as someone who has a Masters in an unrelated field, and as a prof at a local community college, let me add something on how to get through classes you're not really into.

Find some kind of question to ask, several if you can. Relate it to what you like or what you're interested in, or just ask the prof to give you more clarification info. Ask them where you can find out more info on that topic. Ask how that might be usable to what you really want to do. Most profs do want to help and believe their teaching something that is relavent to the world. You may get their juices going and they may actually find something you can use in real life.

If you do it in a way that they don't feel challenged to "prove this crap you're saying" (I don't care myself, but there are a lot of elitest brain-dead profs), but that you just would like more clarification/info for what they are saying, then you'll probably find yourself getting through those classes a bit easier.

PM me if you'd like with some stuff you're struggling with and I may be able to give you some sample questions.

I dropped out of school in my last year. I had been working seasonally for the forest service at the time and decided to move out west full time. when your young everything seams so immediate i suppose. I really regret not finishing even though I wasnt too enthused with the classes I was taking. It gets really hard to go back the longer your out. Ive tried several times and will try finishing online through Oregon State. The other responsibilities keep piling on. Just a thought. My gramps used to say "stick and stay and it will pay"

I say get the degree. I have an associates in forest management and wish I would have just put in the other 2.5 years to get a bachelors directly after tech school. Even though I run a business and a degree doesn't really help much especially with the education you can teach yourself through ISA etc, it is only a couple years and you will have that feather in your cap for the rest of your life. Ya all those pointless classes are bogus, but like others mentioned, it keeps others doors open for the future and you might get to do more interesting work like canopy research as your career advances.

+ lets say down the road the business thing doesn't work out, with a 4 year degree you'll have all the tools to take on an urban forester job or something related, with only an associates, your chances decrease when competing for a job with others who have a 4 year degree (even though you might be way more knowledgeable)

Just my thoughts

Not sure if this is relevant to your situation, but considering the student loan debt that you have: one of my buddies who also went to forestry school for an associates went on to get a bachelors and he worked on the ground crew at this particular university so he could go free of tuition. A skilled arborist is a desirable commodity for a university.
