I have a Whisper chipper with the 4 cyl. It was an Asplundh built machine. Rockford clutch. I am in the middle of a big 3 or 4 day clearing job and we blew a hole in the radiator tonight. I am trying to find a replacement but not having much luck looking online. It is at the job site so I don't have any measurements, but does anybody have any good leads on where to get a radiator? Do I yank it and bring it to NAPA? No luck finding it on their site.

Thanks in advance.

I know chances are slim, but if it is an old school brass and copper rad, you might be able to find a place to rebuild it. If it is a newer plastic tank job, good luck, have no idea where you should look.

THE radiator in one of my chippers started leaking so I pulled it and brought it to an old tyme radiator shop. When I walked in the door the guy looked at it and said...oh..chipper radiator. There wasn't a lot of sawdust trailing away either. He knew his stuff as well as we know trees.

He suggested that he recore the radiator with a special core. There was much more space between the tubes and fins. this allowed sawdust to pass through and not cake up. He explained that when the tubes/fins clogged with sawdust and it got wet there was a chemical reaction which corroded the radiator. He assured me that the cooling capacity wasn't compromised. I trusted him and found that he was right!

Find an old tyme radiator shoppe, you won't be disappointed. And, you'll save a bunch of money too.

And...possibly check with the guy selling used chipper parts in the "General Discussion " forum.

Last replacement radiator I put in a pick-up had plastic tanks and it annoyed me to pay several hundred for it. Then I walked in a auto parts store that catered to street muscle cars some time later and was suprised to see hand made all aluminum radiators for about the same price.

After I ran down Tom's angle on a rebuild from above I would look into adapting over a well built high capacity radiator.

Yeah, us old guys are still worth something. The trick will be finding a radiator shop that can actually do the work.
