Looks like Persian Ironwood (Parrottia persica).
Is the bark peeling in scales and colorful underneath?

Yep-great eye! I knew that I knew the species, just needed a reminder! A really big one of these resides at Biltmore.

Relieved to know I'm not cutting it down, customer just curious, for now! She's one of those who is just getting rid of each tree, one at a time, few years in between. She's not aware of this trait, I'm pretty sure.

Good call on the Parrottia. We have a client on Cape Cod with one and it is a great tree. The bark looks like a Kousa Dogwood and the leaves resemble Beech. Great Tree, low maintenance.
