I have a big ravine in my woods. It's about 900 feet long, 45 feet deep, and about 40 feet wide. I already have a zip line going across it, now I want to build a rope bridge across it also. I think I've found the perfect spot to put it and there is a 40-50' +2' Oak tree on both sides to anchor it to. On one side though, the Oak tree looks a little... jankity at the top...

It looks like it's alive, I see twigs with old leaves on them, but at the top is a lot of what looks like older widow makers. It's hard to tell right now as everything looks dead, but If I top it, it would make sense to do it now since there'd be no rigging involved. Just climb up about 25-30 feet, top it and let it fall. Buck it up for firewood and leave the rest, it's deep in the woods and there's nothing there. But if I make the bridge and notice next year that it IS dead up there and does need to come down, now I have a rope bridge in the way.

So my question is... will removing a majority of the top of an oak tree, harm it in the future?
