nasty cottonwood

It's not going to be a walk in the park like Ed thinks.

Take a bunch of photos (video preferred) Norm. I'd like to see the process.

That much rot would make me sceerd.

Maybe if Norm could come up with some real money you could show him how to do it?

I'd chime in and make that bet too...

Shame how some good threads get c_nted up by know-it-alls.......

There's a cottonwood here in town that I (sort of) bid on.....The parameters weren't accurate......As in, I asked if it would be allowed to totally block the road. Answer, preferably not. So, I asked two crane co's if cars could get around. They thought so. Turns out that is a negatory. So, the job was awarded to a company who is closing the road and using their 40 ton with a man basket to set the slings and a 100 ton to do the picks....

I (and the next lowest bidder) were going to brush out 80-100% of the tree, to save crane time...and road issues. It's a 150 foot, 65" dbh cottonwood. Job awarded at $17k.

It's BS because the city official (their tree) didn't think the other co could do the tree safely...they only have one climber....he thought....but this guy, while overweight, was once the supposed "best" around. And he has used my (hired as needed) climber Cowboy Dave, who, I know is better, and totally capable of doing the tree....As am I, though not right now as I'm facing knee surgery. Recently, I watched the company that got the contract doing a routine multiple fir craning job....The climber had brushed one tree, left the top, rappelled to the next. After craning the top log, he swung over to the first tree......and pulled his lifeline DUH!! Then, he continued working in typical old school fashion, with just one flipline. No safety glasses.....not sure about ear pro. And these guys got the job? Gag me.

Now, the next cottonwood is more difficult as it has a wider canopy with an understory that needs to be avoided. Crane required to brush all out. I don't know if the homeowner awarded the job to these clowns....but, if I'd bid on it, with the objective of keeping a lane open, I'd have needed a 175 ton crane, and maybe $30,000!

Attached photo is the base of the tree. The maple next to it can be removed to make room to work. The road is just above, a hairpin laden road that encircles the perimeter of Mercer Island. Nothing can land on the 40 degree slope.

The canopy. Those limbs are rather large and brittle, with a less than adequately strong high tie point. But, I was quite sure that we could safely lower the linbs, in two or more pieces in many cases, to save crane time and road blockage. If we'd have landed the job, I'd have gotten a Wraptor for canopy access. Going to buy one anyhow soon!

By the way, by far the highest bid on this tree was by Asplundh at $35,000 and change...They obviously didn't want the job, or have no clue how to do big trees....

Here's the privately owned tree, just 80 feet away. While it might be tough to lower the brush on the other tree, it's not possible with this one. Thus, a total crane removal. 100 ton crane barely adequate if parked near the tree..which means total road closure for two days......

or minimum 175 ton crane if working at a 90 foot radius, where it might be possible to keep a lane open......

job would have to be done during spring break when there's no school buses running. And that is when the other co is doing the job.

I'm really rather livid...as I know this company has no clue how to do really difficult trees, when there's limited crane access.

Both these trees are about 40-46" where they branch out, at about 80-90 feet....they ain't little!! And cottonwood can weigh as much as 80-100 lb/cubic foot, down low where its full of water, even this time of year.....So, that weight must be accounted for when craning, especially at an extended radius.

Hey, Holly, are these pecker poles good enuf for ya?

Or will you remain the fool?

I'll agree that getting the crane off the site ASAP is always a priority on crane jobs; they ARE money-pigs.

Looks like a fun-filled day, no doubt.

Getting the crane outta there is definitely the name of the game...unless you own the crane

.

Norm that is a nasty lil bugger in a tight spot, but I think its plenty do-able. I'd bid it for a full day and take my time, no need to rush something like that.

Roger, are those trees too compromised to rig off of? Speedline perhaps? I know cottonwood ain't the most forgiving, but if the price is that high, and the crane access (and lane permits no doubt) are a problem, then why not show how its done without a crane? I prefer a crane everytime too, but sometimes it just aint practical.

Absolutely no chance of speedlining...Some of those limbs are huge.

The job's been awarded. I chastised the city guy for going with that company, and a higher bid. I should have flat out told him that there this outfit is FAR from a professional company. I know for a fact that there is NO ONE in this area more capable of doing those trees than us. Instead I said that, since they were using two cranes, that it would be hard for them to mess up..

Enclosed photo and following post's pics are examples of their work habits.

Note he's left his lifeline in, but untied from it.....(old school, friction knot tied in tail....)

One hand on saw...but I have no problem with that....

No eye/ear pro......nice nick in his only tree attachment (well besides his gaffs...)

Nice saddle too....not....no straps to keep his butt strap from riding up...

He was smooth enough, and had no qualms about going up into a small top...

They were fast and efficient, with the bucket guy simply pulling away from the shorter fir that he was delimbing and topping out,to go over and make the cuts.

When did a guys choose in saddles make him not professional??? When did natural rigging make you a hack???? Do alot of companies have that much time to drive around and get pictures of their compation working????

You should try to say stuff like this with way more confidence. Say it like you have a set, if need be you could buy one. { http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/28/testicle-for-super-bowl-t_n_440482.html }

I guess, I'm a fool???? Either that or I'm totally not charging empolyers enough per hour. I believe the latter is the most true.

True, bull, I shoulda coulda started another thread. That way, Holly could cun t it up too. But Norm hasn't been here for a few days, and I did apologize for my rude interruption.

It's beyond me why Tom and Mark allow that fool to spew his nonsensical diatribes.

No wonder the traffic here is way down.

Technically, my bid was the lowest, but my mother had just passed, and I missed the bid deadline by two hours.

But as I said, there was the issue of whether or not the road could be kept open, even if only for cars. I got comflicting info from two crane op's, including the one that will be doing the job. Turns out, as I found out later, even as my bid had been rejected, the road has to be closed.

But my method, and that of the company that had a valid bid, would have worked. And both of us have more skill and experience than the company that won the job, for about $6000 more. When they floated the idea of using two cranes, that musta got the city guy's attention.....Nice, but unnecessary with these big, but healthy trees.

I was invited to participate in the 2nd round of bids. The lowest bidder in that round is who should be doing the job. He had bid lowest on the first round, but the city changed the requirements. The company that is doing the job didn't bid in that round....maybe they bid in the first go round, I dunno.

They wanted my crane guy (AC DEucy) to operate their 40 ton that will fly the man basket. He declined. He did do a lot of work with them, after our 2006 big storm, so I know they are quite capable of pulling off crane jobs, but as far as rigging, they're not even close to being in our league.
