It all boils down to whether you do things on the Internet that you don't want an unintended audience to know about or exploit for whatever purposes, and means of protecting yourself from it.
If the NSA or whoever becomes truly intent on delving into your online activities, personal bank accounts, credit card numbers and passwords etc, there's really very little you can do about it unless you're smarter than their expert IT's are.
I like the Internet a lot like most people do. But am well aware that nothing done on it is ever truly private in any sense whatsoever.
But I still firmly believe that bad people, govts, politicians and crooks have far more to fear from an open neutral internet than we do as average citizens with little or nothing to hide.
The Internet is the greatest learning tool the world has ever seen in my opinion. Only tyrants and crooks have good reason to fear it or try to censor it.
