Morbark Hurricane 18 problem

I'm having what I hope is a small problem with my 2006 Morbark Hurricane 18. Any Buzzer insight would be greatly appreciated. Here are the details.

700 hours on machine, it has the digital engine management system (push button throttle). When chipper is fully engaged and at full throttle and chipping for about 15 or 20 minutes the rpm's (while brush not going through chipper) suddenly drop down and then struggle to catch up, Temp gage at same time is reading normal. I have changed the fuel filter and the fuel/water seperator like Morbark said to do and nothings changed.

Any ideas?

Thank you for taking the time to read this!

I am not a mechanic.

Questions. does it stop doing it when you disengage the chipper pto..

does it do it if you run the engine for a long time without the chipper engaged.

does it do it at low rpm's.

after it does it and you shut it off for a while does it do it immediately after you restart it or does it take the same amount of time for it to start doing it again..

Maybe a sensor that gets heated up and once cools down stops doing it.

Do you have a murphy switch on your chipper?? On our old Model 17, we've had a similar issue and the murphy switch has always been the problem. This could be your issue, or possibly a sensor. That would be my guess.

It only does it at high rpm. Once it starts doing it even after it gets shut down and then started up again it becomes more frequent. It runs best on the first start up of the day and then gets worse as day goes on.

My fear is that its electrical. I am the second owner and I know that the engine management system has been replaced while first owner had it.

It seems to me that it would be a sensor that is getting heated up then when it cools down overnight it is good the next day. I would call the dealer and ask the mechanics what is a common problem that these units have....sometimes the mechanic will tell you his experience with that model.

I had the same problem intermittently but with increasing frequency over time. Tried different things and finally paid a small fortune for a Cat road mechanic to come out. He fixed it fairly quickly, it was a computer problem. Machine's been a beast ever since.

Sure sounds like a fuel starvation problem to me.I have an 02 2400 and it does this exact same thing when the fuel filters get plugged.I know you said you changed them,so maybe its a blockage somewhere else.Towing the chipper home and then to a job the next day,may be shaking it loose, then as it runs and sucks fuel through the line it becomes blocked again. When the rpm's drop, does it smoke at all?

How old's the fuel?

Diesel fuel grows algae if left for long periods, or has algae growing in the tank. Sounds like fuel filter issues to me. My buddy drives tractor trailers and had this problem on his rig. Fuel filters constantly clogging, and quickly

Just something else to look into.

We have a 3000+ hr hurricane, I think an 03. It was having 'hunting' issues last week and ended up being a cracked steel tank line. With the morbarks, the injector pump is pulling fuel upwards, instead of gravity feed, so any small vacuum leak is going to cause problems. We typically call our local dealer on site and can troubleshoot.

It does smoke when rpms drop. Fuel isn't old but the filter did look as bad as I've ever seen so maybe fuel lines or tank filter could be an issue. Being in Montana there is no Morbark service dealer, however there is a dealer right down the road from my shop but its the kind of dealer that never has inventory they would order a chipper for ya if you needed one so they would be no help. I have an appointment with the Cat dealer, hopefully I can check these other potential problems and fix it myself. I keep everyone updated. Thanks again.

There is a problem with the 2400 fuel tanks rusting badly on the inside,i don't know if they used crap steel or what.I carry extra fuel filters in the truck because they need changed so often.
