monfilament

I got a big shot kit from Sherrill - the monofilament that came on the reel is bunk. Apparently it is, or was, 25lb test. Any advice on what to replace it with?

I don't know if Zing-It or Fling-It will work with a reel, but if so, either would be a real good choice.

I'm sure some of the guys will know about this.

Sherrill used to sell some Spectra that was like thick dental floss for the reel. that's what I use for my in-tree throwline and it would work well for the reel.

Be careful with spectra line like Spider Wire. If it gets stuck and you pull hard with bare hands it will cut right into your fingers... voice of experience. It's really strong.

Fortunately the prices of dyneema fishing lines have fallen. Working off of memory the Kit you are referring to has a big open face spinning reel. Braided lines like Spiderwire or Powerpro can be used but they are a little limp for best performance on that style of reel and the braids don't partucularly "like" the line twist that fixed spool reels induce. A stiffer product such as Spiderwire Fusion or Berkely Fireline will be cheaper and work better on the spinning reel.

I use Berkeley 20lb Fireline on a homemade reel setup.
I copied from NewTribe Tec.
I will get some pics of mine and start a new thread.

the reel seems great - a Zebco spinning reel (with the closed housing) I think the line was in storage for a while and lost its integrity somehow. I'm going to try another fishing line, 20 - 25lb test.

Sherrill's always been good about replacing defective gear, you should be able to get a fresh spool of the 25 lb. test stuff.

Just wanted to verify that you are using the monofilament to pull up a throwline not the climbing rope.

yes, fishing line pulls up a throwline. The fishing line broke while doing this. The throwline that came with the kit was defective and was returned. The message I got from Sherrill via our dealer here said I was supposed to replace the line myself, and then bill Sherrill to an amount (not much. . .) So far its more trouble than its worth, but the one shot I did get off was a good 125' into a thick Douglas Fir. Even with 1.75 Zing it, its still hard to get a throwball to come down in a tree like that.
