mini loader vs. compact tractor loader

I have been looking into buying a mini skid when i recently started thinking about a tractor the BX2350 by kabota. its 4 feet wide can lift 500 pounds and with turf tires seems like a good alternative to buying a mini skid.

does anyone use a tractor like this for tree work or have any input on which one outdoes the other between the mini and compact tractor.

thanks, mick

Mini skids fit through a 36" gate.

That about sells it for me. Tractors are great, we own one as well but the mini skid has been a godsend. Our tractor is currently down with injector issues (first major issue this kubota had had in the 6 years we've owned it) and the mini skid has been in charge of loading all of the wood.

When combined with my dump trailer that only sits 2 feet off the ground it's an amazing duo. No sore backs from crew members flipping wood into the back of the truck, no sore legs from having to log cart the wood out of the back yard and up the ramps into the trailer. It's fricken awesome

By the way, if money is no object, buy a Vermeer or a nice boxer. Our dingo does what it needs to but It isn't as quality as the vermeers or boxers

i see the tractor is alot less money than minis. that is a factor im trying to figure out. you can get a new bx1830 with a grapple bucket for 14,000. I am compairing this to a bobcat mt55 that costs i think 23,000

I had thought about a tractor as well, (I have a friend that uses the John Deere) downside is they don't lift as much as a mini and as far as I know, they really don't lift any higher. They take up more space too which can make a big differance if you want to haul the mini on the trailer along with logs.

Upside is they're faster and can really pull. Dave from TNT Equipment had talked about mounting his BMG to the 3 point hitch. That would be pretty cool.

I always thought a small lighter weight version of the BMG would be sweet for an ATV, set up like a 3 point. You really couldnt load anything with it but you sure could forward the material damn fast.

We have large swinger loaders but decided to get a mini for my crew, as we do most of the big prune jobs. We went with the, Ditch Witch R300 Zahn 4X4 Articulating Tool Carrier Mini Skid Steer Loader. Just picked it up today. All we need now is a Branch Manager Mini Grapple. The dual tires come off and it fits through a 35" gate.

From Branch Manager's website:

"Custom Mounts Available for:
Bobcat MT’s and Gehl AL20"

May/ may not work with all universal miniskid attachments. I'd check this out if you think you'll maybe want other attachments.
