Man hour's.

Re: Man hour\'s.

During the winter afternoon darkness, that last half hour in pitch dark would be hazardous, imo, unless you can get all your gear stowed and trailers hooked up without without incident and your yard is floodlit.

But for some folks it works well I'm sure.

We work till near dark or dark frequently anyway, but to actually plan to be working in the dark, not for me. I don't like starting in the dark nor finishing in the dark.

OT and WC insurance is a real killer

I have never viewed it this way. My fixed overhead costs are paid during the non-overtime period of the work week. For us it is a trade off. Overhead is already paid, but payroll costs increase when o/t kicks in... I think if you have the work the costs are just not that much more...

I love 10's as an owner. The guys love 10's. I was very skeptical when we switched. I would probably never go back to 8's now.

Re: Man hour\'s.

Currently working, or at least shooting for 8 hr days, 5 day weeks. We have a half hr lunch which generally drifts into 45 min. As time progresses and the crew learns to work more effectively together then I think productivity will increase. It's a balancing act where hours of the day are concerned. We have clients that need to be attended to when emergencies arise and thus a firm schedule of 4 days would quickly go out the window. As it is we're working this week (first time in 12 yrs for the company) due to the backlog from the storm.

While a 4-10 week would be good for the crew and allow me to do estimates on the 5th day, I can see it creating a down day that my guys would fill with work somewhere.

Certainly something to ponder.

Re: Man hour\'s.

I think 3 days off, 4 in Tom's case, promotes lethargy in my experience. We go 5 eights and generally do a nice 4 hour job I have hand picked for Sat. Keeps us out in the public eye on Sat, gives the help a little more deserved money and keeps us sharp for Mon. without lag or

hangovers.

No drinkers etc. currently on staff, but used to be.

We eat lunch on the run. No formal lunch taken or deducted.

Sounds like it was a bad experience tried once. Or, did you try it multiple times and still got the same results?

We disscussed it;mMy guys would love more personal/recreationl/family time. They are digging the idea. I'm not affraid of laziness settling in with my guys. They just aren't that type.

And I think it would be nice for me to get undivided attention when I'm doing bids. Otherwise, when I'm in one place and the crew is at a job, questions naturally arise. At times, I'll get a called from the crew when I'm doing bids. Not a lot of questions, just enough to consider a work schedule change as an additional benefit in this context.

Re: Man hour\'s.

Even after working through a summer with 90+ days over 100f I would rather have more time off. Rather than getting partially recharged over night having full days off to relax and recharge would be better. Getting longer weekends is like having mini-vacations too!

Sounds like heaven but the truth of the matter is this job is usually more in a southern direction from there :-)

We have had 16 inches of rain ABOVE the previous record annual rainfall this year.

You got rain MonTueWed, come FriSatSun you got warm beautiful weather with no wind. "Let's kick some butt , guys"..."sorry boss...we on vacay"

Re: Man hour\'s.

I like the 10's as an owner and crew member. Gives me a chance to make up
those hours missed for rain also. I do line clearance for 40 hours (hopefully) then if I have residential work, We go do that on Friday.

Probably. We don't do residential so that is ok. They don't use company gear or equiptment though. What sucks is I still have to work some on Friday's.

Re: Man hour\'s.

Well, it has been about a month and I am still not sure how I feel about it.
Some job's were scheduled for 3 cimber's and two groundie's. That was at an 8 hour day. So when the job comes in after the change, the math change's.
Anyway, I could take it or leave it. I still got stuff to do all the time. Guess I need another month to evaluate.

Re: Man hour\'s.

Well, that was interesting. Production dropped steadily, so starting Monday we are back to 5 8's. They guy's are gonna miss having Friday off, but the number's don't lie.
Maybe try again in the summer when the day's are longer.
