Machine vs hand sharpening, anybody?

[ QUOTE ]

If you know you have to file by hand, maybe more than one saw, you become more careful about cutting earth and stones!!!

[/ QUOTE ]

Those are words of wisdom. If I had a penny for every tooth I've sharpened that someone else has dulled...........

Things to add to hand filing, as you push the file through the tooth, try rotating it with your push hand .The file will last longer this way.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think the main thing that makes the file last longer is wiping the filings off of it between teeth.

hand fileing works better for me

p.s. is it just me or are there no women in this profession?

[/ QUOTE ]

ya, you noticed. there are not so many of us. we do exist though! if the competition circuit is any indication, the (95/5?) ratio is changing. the first year women competed (2001) at ITCC there were i think 4 or maybe 5, compared to last year in hawaii there were 19.

Very true. However, there are those occasional trees with a surprise in there.

And with that said, I prefer to grind.

On the field, I hand sharpen.

How many guys hand sharpen chains that have already or previously been sharpened with a grinder?

Do you find that it takes a couple times hand sharpening to get a true edge after a chain that has previously been sharpened with a grinder?

I've stuck with the idea either hand sharpen or sharpen with a grinder, but going back and forth won't work to well. Am i wrong in thinking this.
