Hi. I'm Dawn. I am in my first year as a self employed Arborist. My company is Urban Arbor Care and I mostly do independent contract work with another arborist whose company is Arboricultural Services. I specialize in plant health care and consulting, but we do pretty much everything tree care, including some climbing.

I live for trees and my favorite thing to do is climb recreationally. I have been climbing for about a year and I aspire to compete at the MI TCC. I got to climb on a job with Kevin Bingham(Michigan's champ)a couple days ago and that was awesome! I'm always looking for climbing partners that want to go up and have some fun and practice skills.

I'm also a volunteer at the university extension (MSU-Oakland)hort dept. as a diagnostic technician/horticultural advisor. I'm ISA certified and a Michigan Certified Nurseryman, certified pesticide applicator and landscape horticulturist. I'm an enviromentalist, joining causes such as Sierra Club, Arbor Day Foundation, Global Releaf, Nature Conservancy and Audubon Society. My life's passion is to make this world a better place, one tree at a time - and have fun in the process :)

Welcome!

Hi everyone.

Just become a member of treebuzz, so this will be my first post.

My name is Josephine Hedger, i have alreay met a number of you through the tree climbing competition rounds. I'm a self employed climber here in the UK. I run a small tree care company on the south coast in a place called The New Forest.
I have been clibing for 6 years now. I also run a training company for all things arb for our qualification system. I enjoy training and assessing but i try not to do too much...A you get neck ache looking up, and B its not as much fun as doing it yourself!
I have competed in the TCC's for a number of years, and hopfully a number of years to come.

Looking forward to seeing most of you again this year.

Wow, this is certainly becoming a star-studded group! Welcome, Josephine! I'm pretty new here, too, but I talk alot LOL! You gals are an inspirational bunch indeed! Hope to meet you and some of the other lady climbers here in Providence this July!

hey jo, welcome. you neglected to mention that you are not only current world champ but have bragging rights to the world footlock record for women....so nice when the badass are modest :)

Hi Jo, Welcome ....

I was on the electronic clock for your foot lock work record.

AWSOME ! ! !

I just showed the ITCC CD video to my new friend & her 10 yr. old daughter (who loves to climb trees).

Both are psych'd to get on ropes when the weather here breaks (it was -10°F here this a.m.).

Ciao !
Greg

You were born to do tree work with a name as 'Hedger'!

Born for more tree work than hedges...!! don't know what its like over america for hedges but here in england there are some nasty things, and far too many of them that need cutting!

Looking forward to the charlotte comp, sure you cant make it Kathy? You could always make a few days surley? How far is seattle from charlotte? I'd always help you catch up on some climbing if needed.

excellent offer and i'll take you up on it if you're serious. seattle is in the NW corner of the country...far far from charlotte. another $400 plane ticket if you shop around.

Hi Dawn, Nice to see you on the buzz. We met at GLTE in Jan. I used to chair MTCC so I know first hand how great it would be to have more female contestants in that chapter. I think the event may be moved closer to home for you too. Don't know yet. Anyway WELCOME! Kristian

So Kathy, hows work still busy? I'm hoping to stay around after the charlotte comp only for a week or so, and playing with the idea of catching a flight up to seatle if you have some work to catch up on. Is this still an option? Just looking at putting some plans together. Let me know what you think.

Hello:
I am Jenn. Trees pretty much encompass my life: I am in graduate school, and my thesis is on molecular level work of Salix and Populus (Willows and Poplars). I have an almost two year old named... ALDER. I am married to an arborist. I have been rec climbing hap-hazardly for almost a year, and have gotten more serious recently. From the looks of things, I might be intering the Midwest Climbing Competition, just for the experience and for a chance to practise AR.

I love to climb!

I was in St. Louis last year to observe, and I thought it was one of the coolest things that I have seen in my life.
Seeing all of the posts by people who are FAMOUS to me is amazing. Hope I am qualified to be one of the Ladies!

WELCOME JDS

well if you were there in St Lou. I really hope you were able to talk to some of the great women that are on this forum. and when you do go to the COMPS, Compete, show the guys that we can do it. OR Volunteer if you just feel it is the right thing to do.

We are growing and learning all the time.

REC climbing (for me) is where the climbing happens, every thing else is just work, (watch the others on her tell me wrong)

POST, SHARE, Education others

i moved to st. louis a few years ago and currently climb towers but rec tree climb every chance i get! ...ok, actually, i prefer to sleep in the trees :)

i've watched a lot about the tree climbing competitions and would love to learn all those techniques i've never really seen first hand; it looks like tons of fun!

i'm always looking for people to climb with around st. louis (i cover eastern half of MO and southern half of IL for work) and if there's anyone in WA or OR interested in climbing i'm visiting there now :-D ...and i brought my gear!

p.s. i think it's awesome that you have this forum! from stats i've seen, less than 2% in my industry are women. i know that many more than that are capable and would enjoy the work; groups like this gradually start closing the gap. you ladies rock! ;o)

GEE ANOTHER ONE

HOW are we SO lucky to have you find us?

No matter,

THANKS for joining and WELCOME to the BUZZ.

Post about and read all you want, there are groups of climbers out there that do climb for fun. Check the Tree climbing thread for local comps. Best way to see what happens is to go and VOLUNTEER to help. THE climbers are always willing to share what they know. Did you also check out the other climber forum for rec climbers - Tree Climbing coalition?

AND there are plenyt of people on here that sleep in trees.

did you get a chance to see the Comp at Forest park last July?

again WELCOME

hey jenn,
welcome! always psyched to see another woman show up and say those last few words ("i love to climb"). there's a ton of info on this site, and usually a fairly minimal amount of interpersonal cr*p to wade through to get to it. enjoy!
