Hi all,
For years I've been using the same kind of Terra boots for climbing (attachment) but would really like something lighter, more in the way of a hiking boot.
What's out there for recomendations?

i know redwing makes a great logger,, stay away from the thinsalat tho,, when i get outa a removal or a prune ,, i can back a chipper in and knot be worried about rolling a ankle or kicking a chock block,, and the steel toe and steel shank always seem to help,, im doing tree work not trying to be the best at execiseing

Check out Vasque sundowners Very nice for climbing and footlock and hold up decent. Made by redwing. No heel makes them less than ideal for removals. For that I wear my Danner Quarrys that I wore in the log woods.

I climb in Columbia Daska Pass boots, REAL tough, well made and best of all? I got my 2 pair at a Columbia box store in Kingston for 60 bucks a pair( cuz they were the discontinued black and yellow colour )! ! !

I should have bought 3 pair, but the way they are wearing? I might be able to get a good year+ out of each pair.
nice Vibram soles that are a softer rubber, good for trees.

I just bought a pair of Raichle X degree 7 MS from www.sierratradingpost.com

I believe someone on another thread said they were the best climbing boots ever. I've been wearing for about 3 weeks and absolutely love them. Even better I got them for $84!!!

I got a pair of those raichle x degree7 as well and have been wearing them for about 2 months. For me they definitely have their pros and cons. They took a few weeks to break in well...I had some nice blisters for a while on my heel and some rubbing on my small toe, the toe box is a little narrow for my foot, but thats one of the pros as well. The other main con I have with them is Ive already rubbed holes on the outside where the two pieces of leather are stitched and the the rubber toe cap meets. It doesnt seem to be deteriorating very fast other than the initial tear, so I guess that is good. The last thing is they arent goretex, which I kind of like. I work in the mtns and am up and dwn mtnsides all day and around creeks and in muddy spots a decent bit, and work in the rain some, so thats kind of a nice thing to have.
now for the pros. Once broken in, they are a great boot to climb in. actually they were fine before broken in to climb, just not to do the heavy hiking/brush dragging up and dwn mtns. They have an awesome sole that grips incredibly well, even on slick branches. So far they are holding up fairly well. These soles make it a lot easier for me to dig my toes into branches to run up compared to my asolo fugitives. Also having the small toe box makes it a lil easier to get in and out of tight crotches. The boot is also tall enough where my spikes leather strap stays on the boot and doesnt ride up onto my ankle.
So I think thats about it. They are a definitely a great boot to climb in regardless of pruning, footlocking, or removals in spurs. Just had a longer break in time.
Oh yeah make sure you order a half size small, they run big, and they are also in UK sizes so check that out as well.
sorry if this is long and drawn out but...

I go through a pair of these every 2 years or so, I like the soft soles for grip when limbwalking and flexible leather. Can't stand climbing in clunky stiff boots except for when doing removal/spiking, which is hardly ever. Timberland makes others with a more flat sole for footlocking but I can't find them lately so I bought these last year for under $100. I like'em.

I have climbed in Merrell's for almost two years without any complaint besides the laces coming untied at times, which can easily be fixed with new laces or a double knot.

I will be buying another pair before the season gets busy here in IL unless you guys convince me on something else.

Check em' out... http://www.merrell.com/US/en-us/Product....or-Mid-GORE-TEX

Also, don't look past the boots Columbia has to offer!!
