Looking for a change

As the title implies, I currently do not work in the tree industry. I stumbled onto this site back 2009 while looking for info on negative blocking (Wespur 2009 catalog featured a picture of it). I only recently registered partly at my wife's urging, she's a big believer in having a job you're gonna love. My current job is not it. Several years ago I took a transfer to my current location because it afforded me a better chance at advancement. A change in upper management has reduced that possibility to zero.

A change into this field wasn't something I just pulled out of a hat. I've been tending to my family and friends trees for more than a decade. Light pruning, storm damage and occasionally removals. (Previous jobs in med. industry and inside demo have taught me proper ppe... no exceptions.) I like getting up to tend to their trees infinitly (sp) more than my current job. I learn very quickly, possess a strong work ethic and attention to detail.

Welcome to TreeBuzz!

If you haven't already, start going back into the archives to read old threads. There's a lot to mine in the archives.

Welcome Jeff! You are in a great area for tree work. The philly area has a long history of companies that promote proper tree care. My advice for a first step would be to join the ISA Penn-Del Chapter and make plans to attend their Tree Climbing competition that should be coming up soon. Go, watch learn and network. You are a bit on the older side to be starting in this industry, but heck, Tom and I are pushing real close to 60 and we are still swinging in the trees.

Yes Welcome. The Penn-Del climbing compitition happened last weekend, but the Masters challenge occurs in Limeric on June 1st. It will be a great way to meet people in this area.
Dont listen to oldoak, you can never be to old to learn something new. Well...pushing 60 might be

. Seriously though, these old guys are the best to learn from they have been there, done that and got the shirt. Their stories are the best.
There are quite a few great companies in this area and lots of guys that are more than willing to teach, and help someone out. Just watch out for the couple that are not so good.
Good luck and welcome to the industry.

You hear this stuff Tom??? I think we need to go teach Squirrel a lesson!

Squirrel: I will be up in PA the end of June, better watch ur back!

HUH?! Nasty comments about age are NOT tolerated!

You'd better put forward an apology Squirrel! :)
